College Basketball Wednesday, January 18 Parlay Picks

Not a bad debut for this piece last time out after cashing four of five parlay legs and it taking a late-game choke by the Northwestern Wildcats to prevent us from sweeping the board. It wasn’t pretty, but the Georgia Bulldogs got us to the window at the online sportsbook by staying a step ahead of Mississippi State all game long. The Creighton Bluejays came up just short at Xavier but stayed within the number. Texas A&M destroyed a Mizzou team that’s night and day on the road as expected, while Louisville hung tough at Clemson to cover a third straight against the college basketball betting odds. Here’s to adding to the bank roll once again with some investments to target for Wednesday night’s parlay cards!

DePaul Blue Demons

After taking on the likes of UConn, Creighton, and Marquette in three of its last four games, Sean Miller’s kids open the week up with what many will believe to be a reprieve against DePaul. While the Blue Demons have proven to be feisty in going 9-8-1 against the CBB odds, it’s still an 8-10 team that has numerous problem areas Xavier should be able to take full advantage of. Even so, this is a tough spot for the Musketeers running up against a DePaul squad that’s logged wins in two of its last five games and went 3-1-1 against the spread in those contests.

As decided an advantage Jack Nunge and Zach Freemantle will have on the glass, the Blue Demons are a decent enough 3-point shooting team (No. 123) that leads me to believe they hit more than a few to kill the hopes and dreams of those laying a likely inflated number with an X-Men team gunning for a 12th straight victory on the road. DePaul’s covered each of the last three in the recent rivalry, so don’t come off shocked if Javan Johnson and co. finds a way to make it interesting once again.

Saint Louis Billikens

At some point the switch is going to flip for the Billikens and I want to be there when it does! Travis Ford’s kids were expected to rule the Atlantic 10 along with the Dayton Flyers at the season’s outset. It did however go on to lose some tough matchups to Maryland, Auburn, Iona, and Boise State in non-con play before turning things around once the A-10 schedule picked up.

While it’s logged wins on four of five tries out of the chute, it’s only amassed a 2-3 tally against the spread. As such, I think Yuri Collins and his mates will be laying a reduced number against a very poor Loyola side whose glory days look to be in the rearview mirror. The Billikens excelled ability to hold onto the basketball (No. 51), edge on the glass, and excelled two-point defense to limit what Loyola does best offensively should see it go on the road and win this matchup by margin. Just make sure Collins is a go with the senior listed as questionable due to an illness.

Florida Gators

We backed Buzz Williams’ kids at home against Mizzou last week, but we’ll be fading them this time around in the rematch with Colin Castleton and the Gators. A tough sell no doubt with the Aggies charging after winning a sixth straight over the weekend by dropping 94 points on the Gamecocks on the road. Still, it’s a spot I simply can’t pass.

A&M already went into Gainesville and handed Florida a 66-63 defeat as 6-point dogs by way of forcing 17 miscues and actually getting to the stripe 28 times compared to UF’s 22. The Aggies only shot 38 percent from the field which included a 2 of 16 showing from beyond the arc. Todd Golden has led his kids to three straight wins since that loss, and they came a bucket short of covering all three. Florida sports the better of the two defenses and I fully expect it to travel in this pivotal revenge spot against the Aggies.

Missouri Tigers + Over

Fade the Tigers on the road and back the ever living heck out of them at home. That’s been my mantra to this point of the season and I won’t abandon that train of thought in this home bout with a fledgling Arkansas outfit. The Hogs have sorely missed Nick Smith Jr. and his double-digit scoring output with the team just 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS since it was decided he would be out indefinitely to strengthen his injured knee. Mizzou returns home off a pair of ugly losses at Texas A&M and Florida, and that’s a good thing considering its won 11 of 12 in front of the hometown faithful with the lone defeat coming against top-ranked Kansas.

The Tigers will also be seeking revenge after dropping a 74-68 decision to the Hogs as 7.5-point dogs back on January 4. It got destroyed on the glass (37-24) and only hit paydirt on 6 of 19 long range shots. I think D’Moi Hodge and co. shoot the lights out and bury the Razorbacks in a high scorer!

Marquette Golden Eagles

Shaka Smart’s Golden Eagles currently look up at Providence and Xavier in the Big East standings after falling to both squads in their respective first run-ins. Kam Jones and co. return home to host the Friars coming off another competitive defeat at the hands of the Musketeers. On top of that, they dropped a 103-98 decision to Bryce Hopkins and the Friars back in December. That game saw Providence benefit from a heavy dose of home cooking evidenced by shooting 49 free throws compared to Marquette’s 19. The Golden Eagles were forced to shoot 50 percent from the field just to combat all those freebies!

The home team will march KenPom’s No. 2 ranked offense onto the hardwood for this rematch, and I have a hard time envisioning Ed Cooley’s kids being able to keep up with it provided Marquette doesn’t lose the rebounding battle by the 15 caroms it did in the first go-round. Marquette runs away and hides if the shots are falling!
