When you look at college basketball futures it is important to keep in mind that there are always surprises. Last season in March Madness it was Loyola-Chicago making a shocking run to the Final Four, while Nevada made a surprise run to the Elite Eight. Kentucky, North Carolina and Michigan State didn’t even make it past the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Expect a lot of surprises again during the 2018-2019 college basketball season.

Favorite

The Duke Blue Devils begin the season as the top choice to win the 2019 national title. The Blue Devils have a great coach in Mike Krzyzewski and a lot of young talent led by Zion Williamson. He averaged 29.7 points and 11.3 rebounds in the team’s preseason play in Canada. He is joined by Cam Reddish and R.J. Barrett along with Tre Jones.

Other Contenders

Kentucky is the preseason pick to win the SEC. They have senior forward Reid Travis and sophomore forward PJ Washington. Travis is a graduate transfer from Stanford who averaged 19.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per game a year ago. Washington is Kentucky’s leading returning scorer at 10.8 points per game.

Gonzaga and Kansas are also listed at single-digit odds. Gonzaga is led by Killian Tillie who scored almost 13 points per game last season. The Bulldogs also have Josh Perkins who is their senior point guard and they have Rui Hachimura and Zach Norvell.

Kansas has one of the top players in the country in Dedric Lawson and another possible All-American in Quentin Grimes. If the Jayhawks can get someone to play well at point guard they could be a title contender.

North Carolina has a future NBA lottery pick in Nassir Little and blue chip prospect Colby White. They also have Luke Maye who is a third-team All American player.

Darkhorse Contenders

There are a lot of teams that could get into the mix and win the 2019 National Championship. Last year’s No. 1 seed, the Virginia Cavaliers are not getting a lot of love in the preseason odds, but they return Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome along with De'Andre Hunter, who was injured during last year’s NCAA Tourney. Virginia is listed at +1800 to win the title.

Nevada is getting a lot of attention in college basketball futures. They made a great run last year and they are capable of going farther this season. They landed forward Jordan Brown, their first-ever five-star prospect. He won two gold medals with USA Basketball. He is joined by Caleb and Cody Martin along with Jordan Caroline.

Villanova is listed at odds of +1000 even though they have won the national title in two of the last three years. Can Villanova do it again? Villanova will be very young, as they will have three sophomores in the starting lineup. Two or three freshmen will be getting a lot of playing time. Villanova does bring back Phil Booth and Eric Paschall.
