The Michigan State Spartans were cruising with a 13-game winning streak putting them atop the Big Ten Conference standings. However, a trip out west last week burst their bubble with losses to USC and UCLA. Sparty looks to get back in the win column with a matchup against another former Pac-12 club the Oregon Ducks when they meet on Saturday, February 8 from the Breslin Center. It’s been a tale of two years for the Ducks, who finished 2024 with a 12-1 record and a spot among the top 10 in the national rankings. Since the calendar flipped to 2025 it’s been a different story. Maybe that’s because the Big Ten is a darn good hoops league. It started with a 109-77 thrashing by then No. 22 Illinois at home and their recent slide dropped them to 4-6 in 2025. If it’s any consolation the closest of their four losses occurred on Wednesday against Michigan.
The Ducks rallied from a 14-point deficit to get within two on a pair of T.J. Bamba free throws with less than a minute remaining in the second half, but UM converted its free throws down the stretch to pull out the 80-76 win. The Ducks covered the 7.5-point spread earning their first payout in seven games, but lost their fourth in a row for the first time in more than a decade. They’ve also lost three straight to ranked opponents and their last three games on the road. not a good mix heading into their contest at No. 9 Michigan State.
Leading scorers Nate Bittle and Jackson Shelstad have provided plenty of offense all season with each averaging more than 12 points. Shelstad had 18 and Bittle 16 in the Michigan game. One area that has affected Oregon is depth. They got just six points from the bench against the Wolverines. They also struggle from behind arc shooting 33 percent making it harder to comeback if they fall behind.

Their trip out west didn’t go as planned with a 70-64 loss to USC on Saturday ending Michigan State’s 13-game winning streak. They lost outright as a 4-point favorite but overall the Spartans have been a good bet with 10 payouts in their last 14 games. And getting back on their home floor could be the elixir that cures their ills. Sparty has yet to lose at the Breslin Center going 11-0 with payouts in seven of those games.
MSU had a hard time scoring the basketball in LA failing to score more than 64 points in any of the two games and producing two of their three lowest scoring games of the season. That was a little shocking since they average nearly 80 points by shooting just under 47 percent from the field. However, their three-point shooting has been inconsistent. They made just 5 of 22 triples against UCLA and shoot 28.7 percent from deep on the season.
Despite their inefficiency on offense against UCLA the Spartans had the last shot with a chance to win the game. And the right player had the ball in his hands. Jaden Adkins missed the potential game-winning three and he was the only MSU player to score in double figures hitting three of the team’s five three-pointers for 15 points. MSU did enough defensively to win holding the Bruins to 35 percent from the field, but Sparty made just 20 of 53 shots and committed 16 turnovers. Back home against the reeling Ducks I like MSU to get the cover.
