The Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors made waves at the trade deadline with blockbuster moves. Dallas got Anthony Davis in exchange for Luka Doncic in a less than popular deal with Mavs fans. Making things worse AD got hurt in his first game and could miss several weeks. Not a good turn of events for a club looking to rise from a play-in spot. The Warriors feel like lottery winners getting Jimmy Butler for minimal assets. The Dubs won their first two games with Butler in the lineup before, ironically, losing to the Mavs last week. The clubs clash once again in a nationally televised ABC game on Sunday with tip scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET from Chase Center. The Mavs have won five of the last six meetings and are 5-1 against the NBA point spread at the Bitcoin sportsbook in that span.

Less than a year after a trip to the NBA Finals the Mavs tore down the roster with the unpopular trade of Doncic. Sure the dude is a stud when he plays, but he just hasn’t played a lot over the last few years. And at the time of the trade Doncic was on the shelf. He hadn’t played a game for the Mavs since Christmas. I didn’t find the trade all that upsetting since Dallas was getting a stud in return. And Davis was having a big game in his debut with 26 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists before leaving with a leg injury that could leave AD on the shelf for several more weeks.
It’s not like the Mavs were hurting without AD since they only got less than a full game from him. And Doncic hadn’t played in 2025. The rest of the roster has performed well with Kyrie Irving taking over as the alpha. And the entire roster stepped up in the last game before the break. With Irving and Klay Thompson out of the rotation the Mavs won for the fourth time in five games over Miami, 118-113. Dante Exum scored 27 points leading seven players in double figures.
The Doncic trade doesn’t look as bad with the emergence of Max Christie, who is averaging twice as many points as he did in 46 games with the Lakers. The sample size is small but Christie has scored at least 15 points in every game while playing 10 more minutes on average. It looks like all the dude needed was a chance. In last week’s 111-107 win over the Warriors Irving went for 42 points and Thompson hit five three-pointers for 17 points.
Golden State Warriors
The Warriors needed a jolt and the acquisition of Butler could be what they need to get them into the postseason. Even with Butler the Dubs are not a championship contender, but getting to the top six and avoiding the play-in tournament is a good start for them. They won three of four games since Butler was inserted into the lineup. He scored 25 points against his former team Chicago in his debut and has scored at least 19 in every outing.
The presence of Butler has also ignited Steph Curry, who averaged 31.0 points in those four games and made a total of 23 three-pointers. However, Butler has a way of wearing out his welcome, something he’s done at every stop of his NBA career and it’s only a matter of time before it happens again. Right now, though, the Warriors are a better club with Butler.
Finishing off a seven-game road trip on Friday, the Dubs play at Chase Center for the first time since Feb. 3 when they defeated Orlando. No longer do the Warriors have homecourt dominance with just a 15-13 record. They are also just 4-3 SU and ATS in their last seven home games with a 30-point setback to Boston and a 25-point defeat to Phoenix in that span.
