The NBA regular season might be coming to a close, but there is still plenty to be decided down the stretch. The oddsmakers are well aware of each team’s motivation at this point and that is playing a role in how the spreads are being calculated.

Odds Analysis
The Orlando Magic has a lot to play for down the stretch as it is still on the tail of the Miami Heat and Brooklyn Nets for a final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Magic will host the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday and is expected to win. However, the spread is being posited at 6.5 points, which is too rich. New Orleans should keep this one close down to the wire and should be in the mix to cover.
The Utah Jazz is on the road but has been instituted a double-digit favorite. That can only mean one thing: it is playing a really poor opponent. That’s the story, as Utah will be facing off against the woeful New York Knicks. New York is the 12-point underdog even at home, but that spread is much too high. The Knicks is going to lose, but only by single digits.
The San Antonio Spurs are the hottest team in the NBA, as they have won nine consecutive games and have suddenly surged into fifth place in the Western Conference standings. San Antonio has been great at home this season and will be there on Wednesday against the Miami Heat. Miami would love to spring the upset, but that’s not going to happen. The Spurs are the 6.5-point favorites, and it’s a mild surprise the spread is that low. Take San Antonio to cover this spread at home as it secures yet another victory.

The spread with the easiest call of Wednesday’s opening lines resides up in Portland. The Trail Blazers are still jockeying for position in the Western Conference with the Rockets, Spurs and Thunder and needs to keep stacking victories. Portland has an enviable matchup on Wednesday as it hosts the Dallas Mavericks, a team that has been among the worst in the Western Conference for the majority of the season.
Dallas might have Luka Doncic leading the way, but he does not have too much help. The Mavericks are a pitiful 6-28 on the road this season, and many of those losses have come against teams worse than the Blazers.
Portland has been made a 10-point spread in this matchup, and the oddsmakers are clearly docking the Trail Blazers because they won’t have star shooting guard C.J. McCollum in this game due to injury. It’s obviously a big absence as McCollum is the team’s second-best player behind Damian Lillard, but that is a concern for games that are not as lopsided.
Lillard should put on a show, and Portland will see to it that it runs away with this game at home against Dallas. The Blazers are the choice to cover the spread, and that is the lock of the day among the early Wednesday betting lines in NBA gambling.
