For the second straight week I missed hitting a three-team NBA parlay by half a point. Looking on the bright side, that’s pretty good since there were plenty of unknowns at the start of the season with a massive amount of turnover throughout the league. We’re just a few weeks and a handful of games into the 2023-24 NBA season with plenty still to figure out. However, we do know that the O’Brien Trophy favorite Boston Celtics and defending champion Denver Nuggets are for real. Boston won its first five games before falling in overtime at Minnesota on a cold shooting night. And the Nuggets opened with seven victories in eight games proving they clearly are poised for another championship run.
Denver covered the 5.5-point line in a 125-114 home triumph over Dallas last Friday with Nikola Jokic finishing one assist shy of another triple-double. The Nuggets withstood a 33-point effort from Luka Doncic. The Warriors and OKC have played some high scoring affairs with the losing team scoring at least 114 points in each of the previous four meetings. Backing the OVER was the smart play and it paid off in the Dubs 141-139 triumph. I had the Bucks covering the 5.5-point line their home tilt with New York only to see Milwaukee post a 110-105 win leaving me a half-point away from a winning parlay.

Trading James Harden has made the 76ers a better team. While The Beard is definitely a talented hoopster there are times when egos and personal needs make a situation toxic. And that’s what was going on in Philly. After losing their opener by a point in Milwaukee, the Sixers reeled off five straight wins going 6-0 ATS to start the season. Joel Embiid is off to a blistering start averaging 32.5 points and 11.0 rebounds while the club improved its depth in the Harden deal. Nic Batum contributed 11 points in 17 minutes in a rout of the Wizards with every player acquired from the Clippers scoring. Detroit isn’t very good and they’ll struggle against Philly’s depth and firepower.
The new-look Celtics had a strong start to the season thanks to an offense that averaged 123.5 points through the first six contests. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are the big guns but we’ve seen more balance with Kristaps Porzingis averaging nearly 20 points and Jrue Holiday taking over as the defensive stopper. Just last week the Cs won by 10 in Brooklyn pushing the closing line. At home Boston should cover on my NBA parlay.
With Harden making his debut the Clippers’ lineup looked like an All-Star game. Harden, Russell Westbrook, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard took the court in New York only to be snuffed out by the Knicks. Harden had a decent debut scoring 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting with six assists and as he gets acclimated to the system and his new teammates the offense will click. There are just too many weapons for it not too.
The Clips’ lineup is loaded with alphas, which could be a problem. But if players adopt roles and understand the bigger picture, they could be scary good. Led by Doncic and Kyrie Irving, the Mavs are off to a hot start winning six of their first seven games with the OVER 5-2. Points should be plentiful making the OVER a solid pick in this game.
