The first Friday night of the 2023-24 NBA season has 11 games on the slate with preseason Larry O’Brien Trophy favorite Boston Celtics looking to exorcise some demons when hosting the Miami Heat. For those who may have forgotten, and I’m sure many Celtics fans are in that category, the Heat won Game 7 in Boston to win the Eastern Conference and advance to the NBA Finals. Miami became the second No. 8 seed to reach the championship series. Playing for the East title in each of the past two seasons and in three of the last four, the teams have created quite a rivalry and there will certainly be plenty of fireworks.
The defending champion Denver Nuggets are also in action visiting the Memphis Grizzlies in the first of a brief two-game road trip. Nikola Jokic started the season right where he left off dominating the Lakers with a triple-double in a 119-107 win and cover. Last season the Nuggets proved you don’t have to be great on the road to win a title. They finished three games under .500 during the regular season. The Portland Trail Blazers play their first home game without Damian Lillard when they take on the Orlando Magic. Lillard is one of several players that changed teams during the offseason and the NBA has a record number of international players that will shape the betting markets over the course of the season.

With two Eastern Conference Final losses to the Heat in the past four seasons and three meetings between the clubs overall, the Celtics rebuilt their roster to better matchup with Miami’s non-descript positionless lineup. In a way it’s still the same Boston team that’s been to the conference final five times in the last seven seasons. In 2017 when the run started Jaylen Brown was a rookie with Jayson Tatum added the next season. The superstar pair is still around years later with complementary pieces that add depth, spacing and more balance to the offense.
They Celtics aren’t guaranteed another trip to the East Final or even a playoff berth, but past failures can be used as motivation. And while it’s little consolation a win over the Heat will help with their psyche and send a message.
According to just about everybody the Spurs have the Rookie of the Year in Victor Wembanyama, a generational talent that will help the club rise from the ashes. I would’ve backed away from the Spurs if this was their first game, but playing the Mavs at home Wednesday will take pressure off Wemby allowing him to play more freely against the Rockets on Friday. As a result the Spurs will take care of their in-state rival.
How is life without Dame going to be for the Blazers? Welp, we don’t know for sure but it probably won’t end well. With youth and draft picks Portland is set up for the future but they have to endure the present. The overall record sucked last season at 34-48 but a deeper dive saw that the Magic finished one game above .500 over their final 57 contests. They endured a rebuild and are on the other side of coming out with young stars Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner ready to help. Winning on the road is a start and I like Orlando’s roster as a sleeper in the East.
