Betting on Charlotte this Wednesday night is as big of a zag as you will find at this point in the NBA season. The Hornets are one of the four worst teams in the NBA, but they are going on a little run right now. They have won four straight games with victories over playoff contenders like Atlanta, Minnesota, and Miami. Lonzo Ball, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Gordon Hayward are all healthy and on the floor together, and that has made them more competitive than you might think given their 19-43 record.
There is no clear missive from the top to finish in dead last like there seems to be from Detroit, San Antonio, and Houston too. Those three teams all have four fewer wins than Charlotte, and they all appear to be dead set on losing as much as possible to help their chances of landing either Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson. Wembanyama and Henderson are two clearcut franchise changers, and they are even more valuable after presumed No. 3 overall pick Brandon Miller’s legal issues were recently brought to light.
Meanwhile, Phoenix is already being crowned as the Western Conference champions after their move to trade for Kevin Durant. The Suns didn’t have to give up any of their three best players for Durant, and they acquired one of the 20 best players in NBA history in return for him. However, they did get rid of two important do-it-all players in Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson. Those are players that will be missed, and the Suns are indeed just 3-3 since making the trade. Additionally, Phoenix is just 33-29 overall this season, as the franchise hasn’t been as strong as it looked the last two seasons.
Durant is set to make his Phoenix debut in this game, and that will lead to an inflated NBA betting line on this game. It will take some time for Durant to gel with his new teammates, so the Hornets are a great play as a home underdog here.
As for the second part of the parlay, Oklahoma City has been one of the most profitable teams to bet on this season. The Thunder are still building to the future, and they weren’t seen as a potential playoff team after No. 2 overall pick Chet Holmgren suffered a season-ending foot injury in August. However, OKC is 28-32 and sits just 1.5 games out of the play-in tournament. Shea Gilgeous-Alexander has been outstanding, and young players like Josh Giddey and Luguentz Dort are starting to figure it out.
The Los Angeles Lakers are only a half-game ahead of Oklahoma City, and they are doing everything they can to make the playoffs. However, LeBron James is now dealing with a right foot injury, and the Lakers are already 14-18 on the road this year.
