If you think one key player can’t sway oddsmakers you didn’t see what happened to the Dallas Mavericks’ 2023 championship odds after acquiring Kyrie Irving before the NBA trade deadline. Prior to the deal the Mavs were sitting around 25/1 but moved to +1785 on the odds board afterwards. They aren’t the favorite, but they made a significant move, and remember this club reached the Western Conference final last year.
Not long after the Irving trade was consummated, the Phoenix Suns acquired Kevin Durant helping their championship odds. Two seasons ago the Suns reached the NBA Finals bowing to Milwaukee. Last season they had the best regular season record in the league and were upset by the Mavs in the second round. The championship window is still wide open though injuries have played a role in the Suns mediocre record so far. They recently got Devin Booker back in the lineup and KD is expected to return sometime in late February.
The balance of power shifted a bit at the deadline with the Nets taking a hit by trading away two extreme talents. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is the Boston Celtics remaining the team to beat, according to oddsmakers. Boston has been the best team in the league all season and while the race for the overall top seed has gotten tighter, the Celtics hold down the top spot on the odds list. Based on last season’s trip to the Finals and them owning the best record in the NBA for most of this season, the Celtics stayed atop the championship odds board. The Cs made no significant moves at the deadline, but they didn’t really have to with one of the more balanced rosters. They’ve dealt with injuries this season and currently have starters Marcus Smart and Jaylen Brown on the shelf. Not considered long-term ailments, it’ll be like making a deadline deal when those two return, which is expected to happen by the end of the month.
Following a three-game losing streak toward the end of January, the Celtics rebounded by winning five of their next six becoming the first team to reach 40 victories with a win over Charlotte. The rotation is anchored by Jayson Tatum, who dropped 41 on the Hornets. The MVP candidate is averaging 30.8 points, 8.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists. And the club showed off its depth with Derrick White scoring 33 points with 10 assists. The depth has allowed the Celtics to maintain a top-5 ranking in both offensive and defensive efficiency.
It wasn’t quite the first half we envisioned from the Suns, who were under .500 just a few weeks ago. Getting Durant was a sign that the Suns are all in for another deep playoff run and oddsmakers agreed dropping them around +1800 to the second best option on the board. The Suns were just a few games over .500 at the time of the trade and are entrenched in a top six in the West. After cruising to the best regular season record last year and getting ousted in the second round, the Suns are taking a different approach. With Durant joining the core of Devin Booker, Chris Paul and Deandre Ayton, they could make noise come playoff time.
With their current odds it’s safe to say the defending champion Warriors are among the second tier of favorites, though it hardly seems like it. Floundering around .500 most of the season with the inability to win on the road, the Dubs will likely make the postseason, but it doesn’t look like they’re in any shape to defend their crown.
Dallas and Cleveland currently have longer odds than the Dubs but appear to be in a better situation. The Mavs got Luka Doncic the help he desperately needed to make them a stronger team. Irving will help with the offensive struggles while taking some heat off Luka. And if the Mavs start winning games with those two on the floor the Mavs’ odds are going to improve.
