Stellar defense and the ability to put points on the board has been the main catalyst to the Pelicans recent win streak. Stan Van Gundy’s troops averaged 118.3 points and only allowed an average of 107.7 points over the course of the team’s recent three-game win streak against the Suns, Pacers and Grizzlies. Both averages exceeded their season-long efficiency ratings at both ends of the court. With that, the team is either rounding into shape or currently playing above expectations; likely a little of both. The Pelicans check in 4-7 SU and 5-6 ATS on the road to date. As for Dallas, its six-game winless and coverless streak is now a thing of the past after taking three of four against the Hawks, Warriors and Timberwolves dating back to February 3. Still, the wins didn’t do much in the way of boosting their backer’s bankrolls after compiling a poor 1-3 ATS record in those games. The Mavericks have won three of the last four times they hosted this rivalry but only split against the closing NBA odds; the over went 3-1 with nearly 240 points denting the scoreboard on average.
New Orleans Pelicans
Bench production continues to be a major sore spot for the Pelicans to this point of the season. That however didn’t matter last time out after Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, Eric Bledsoe and Lonzo Ball combined for 93 of the 118 points put on the board to earn the win and cover as 1-point home dogs against Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies last time out. The game was nip and tuck the whole way up until the fourth quarter when the Pels turned a seven-point deficit into a nine-point lead after going on an 18-2 run to take full control of the game. The win allowed for the team to log its first three-game win streak of the season, and it also saw them come out on the right side of the scoreboard five of the last seven times they hit the hardwood.
Dallas Mavericks
After fending off Golden State in what proved to be a grueling two-game series that saw each team log a victory, the Mavs looked destined towards winning a second straight early on against the Timberwolves the next time out. Those that laid the 10-points looked well on their way towards cashing a ticket through a quarter of play with Big D owning a decided 43-22 advantage. Unfortunately, Minnesota would go on to outscore Dallas in every remaining quarter to ultimately fall by a 127-122 final count. That right there in a nutshell is betting the NBA! Regardless, Dallas was back to its efficient ways offensively with five players going for double-digits with Kristaps Porzingis’s 27 points and 13 rebounds leading the charge.
New Orleans vs. Dallas Prediction
The Mavericks will own the scheduling advantage heading into this crucial divisional showdown with the Pelicans. New Orleans had a back-to-back versus Houston and Chicago earlier in the week, while Dallas got to host Atlanta on Wednesday. It will be interesting to see what shape the Pels’ legs are in to take advantage of the extreme advantage they’ll have on the glass. I’m betting the fatigue will rear its ugly head late in the game when it matters most ultimately allowing Big D to pull away and go on to log the win and cover. Likely to help them get there will be the Mavs better than average free throw shooting (No. 14).
