We expected there to be some surprising deaths in the final few episodes of Game of Thrones, but the showrunners still managed to shock us in the fourth episode on Sunday night. The first death was the most surprising. After managing to survive the Battle of Winterfell despite being seriously injured, Rhaegal was killed in a matter of moments midway through the episode. Euron Greyjoy’s men took out Daenerys’ second dragon with three well-placed scorpion bolts, leaving the Mother of Dragons with only one dragon still alive.
Missandei’s death at the end of the episode was a reminder of just how vicious Cersei can be. Most expected her beau Grey Worm to die before her, but after she was captured by the Iron Fleet, her days were numbered. Her death may be the catalyst for more bloodshed too as Daenerys seems dead set on taking revenge.
Who Will Rule Westeros at the End of Season Eight?
Jon Snow +250
Sansa Stark +300
Daenerys Targaryen +400
Tyrion Lannister +500
Gendry +600
Cersei Lannister +1000
Bran Stark +1200
Jon Snow and Daenerys’ Baby +1400
Arya Stark +1600
Varys +2000
Samwell Tarly +3300
Jaime and Cersei’s Baby +3300
Euron Greyjoy +4000
Jaime Lannister +5000
Davos +8000
Last week, I made the case for taking Daenerys at +800 to rule Westeros at the end of the season. That proved to be a shrewd bet as her odds have been halved even though she lost one of her dragons and one of her advisors.
Jon Snow is once again the favorite, and the show is setting up a way for him to rule Westeros. Now, many important players know the secret of who his parents really are, and both Varys and Tyrion have admitted that he might be a better ruler than Daenerys. Tyrion is still loyal to Daenerys for now, but Varys’ loyalties are wavering and he may throw his weight behind Jon Snow.
That seems a bit too obvious for a show as clever as Game of Thrones though. Even though the creators have given us plenty of fan service over the last two seasons, that is too predictable of an ending for a show that has taught us to expect the unexpected. There may be some value in Jon Snow and Daenerys’ child ruling as a little twist on the conventional wisdom.
Who Will Kill Cersei Lannister?
Arya Stark +140
Jaime Lannister +175
Field +450
Cersei Lives +600
Tyrion Lannister +750
Daenerys Targaryen +750
The Hound +800
Sansa Stark +1000
Brienne +1400
There has been some movement on this prop as Arya Stark is now the favorite to kill Cersei. Melisandre’s prophecy is ringing in the heads of many Thrones viewers, and the last we saw of her, she was on her way south. She is presumably heading to King’s Landing in order to kill the Queen (as well as a few others), and if she can kill the Night King, she can slay Cersei Lannister.
Jaime Lannister is heading to King’s Landing too, but his intentions are a little more ambiguous. The sexual tension between Jaime and Brienne finally boiled over this week, but Jaime sullenly left Winterfell in the middle of the night, leaving Brienne heartbroken. He could decide to take revenge on his sister after she sent Bronn to kill both he and Tyrion.
It seems unlikely for any of the other named characters to kill her, so I think that the field might be a good play. Cersei could die in some random fashion or take her own life once she realizes all is lost. I don’t think Cersei lives as almost every evil character has eventually gotten their comeuppance, and she should be no different. Especially considering Maggie the Frog’s prophecies about her life.
