After a thrilling weekend at The Open Championship you can expect a more restrained atmosphere this week when the PGA Tour heads to the Twin Cities suburb of Blaine, Minnesota, for the fifth playing of the 3M Open. There is a dip in the talent pool with most big names taking the week off following the final major of the season. Nonetheless we will see a full-filed of golfers looking to make one last charge up the FedExCup standings or to solidify their ranking with the playoffs just two weeks away. A win as the betting favorite in last year’s edition was the first of four titles in the last 25 starts for Tony Finau, who once again opened at the top of the odds board. Co-runners-up last year, Emiliano Grillo and Sungjae are part of the full-field set to peg it up at TPC Twin Cities with all of them featured in tournament matchups. Need to Know
A long time stop on the Champions Tour, TPC Twin Cities was renovated prior to the PGA Tour’s arrival in 2019. The track stretches to 7,431 yards at par 71. And there isn’t a lot of data to work with since the tournament is just in its fifth year. The Arnold Palmer design features upwards of 30 water hazards with a number of strategically-placed bunkers sprinkled throughout. The obstacles shouldn’t impede too much and low scores are expected. The previous four titlists averaged 18-under par with Finau overcoming a five-swing deficit in the final round last year to win by a record three shots. The course is relatively straightforward and avoiding obstacles will lead to lower scores.
3M Open Matchup Picks
Emiliano Grillo +117 vs. Hideki Matsuyama
It’s been hit or miss for Grillo over the last few months with more hits, and when he hits he hits hard. Over his last 10 starts he has four top 10s, including a playoff win at the Schwab in May. He does have three MCs in that span, but coming off a T6 at The Open with two podiums in three career starts at TPC Twin Cities, I’ll back the plus odds in this matchup.
Sepp Straka -110 vs. Ludvig Aberg
It’s hard to overlook what Straka has accomplished in his last two starts with a win at the John Deere Classic and one of four T2s at Royal Liverpool. He’s been known to go on heaters in the past and he appears to be in the middle of a run right now making him a solid pick in this matchup against one of the top young talents on Tour.
Taylor Montgomery +105 vs. Will Gordon
After a blistering start to the season that saw Montgomery finish among the top 15 in eight of his first nine starts, the former UNLV standout has cooled off considerably. And in a current run of three straight MCs, his odds have shifted. I made some coin off Montgomery in matchups earlier in the season and see value in his price. This is a tournament similar to the ones he enjoyed so much success at in the fall that a return to form is inevitable.
Sahith Theegala +113 vs. Aaron Rai
We had Theegala on the fast track to super stardom with an explosive season that included six top 20s in his first 12 starts. However, following a T5 at the RBC Heritage in April, Theegala has just one top 30 in his last eight starts with two of his MCs for the year taking place in the last two weeks. It’s not like he’s played poorly missing the cut line by a stroke at the Scottish Open and carding a 68 in Round 2 of The Open. I’ll take my chances at plus odds that the former Wave rebounds.
Adam Hadwin -105 vs. Gary Woodland
It shouldn’t take much for Hadwin to find his game at the Twin Cities layout. He’s eager to get back on the course since it’s been several weeks since a MC in the Quad Cities that followed a playoff loss at the RMC. His pin-point accuracy and strong putting are made for the layout and he has the results to prove it with a solo fourth and T6 in three starts.
