With major season behind us and the 3M Open the penultimate tournament on the regular season PGA schedule, don’t be surprised if the atmosphere is more subdued this week. Several players are looking to improve their status or make a late run in the FedExCup standings including Justin Thomas, who currently sits outside the top 70 that will advance to the FedEx St. Jude Championship is a few weeks. Tony Finau is hoping history repeats itself at the TPC Twin Cities course. Entering last year’s tournament as the betting favorite, Finau overcame a five-shot deficit in the final round to win by three swings. A two-time winner this season, Finau is favored slightly ahead of Cameron Young and Sungjae Im on the opening PGA Tour odds. Odds Analysis
Tony Finau +1350
It happens that I backed Finau in last year’s event and he paid off. I don’t often back the favorite, but like last year he has a decent price to go along with a solid history at this layout. A minor concern is that the results haven’t been there lately with no top 30s and three MCs in his previous six starts so this tournament comes at a good time. He has a podium finish and two other top 30s to go along with last year’s victory in four career 3M Open starts.
Adam Hadwin +3650
One thing we can say about Hadwin is that he’s rested since not pegging it up following his MC at the John Deere Classic several weeks ago. And you know he’s eager to get back out there to atone for that effort. He did solidify his playoff positioning the week prior losing in a playoff at the Rocket Mortgage Classic so now it’s about chiseling off some rust. Hadwin has also enjoyed success on this track going 3 for 3 with a solo fourth and T6 at TPC Twin Cities.
Tom Hoge +6050
As we found out at Royal Liverpool last week taking a gander down the odds board can sometimes pay off handsomely. It isn’t easy picking a winner among 156 players in the field, but one that stands out is Hoge. He’s struggled a bit lately and endured the same fate last season before claiming a T4 on this course. He also has to feel better about his game after hanging around the top of the leaderboard at the Scottish Open.
Sungjae Im +1450
A common theme among my picks has been success at TPC Twin Cities. Im is part of that crowd securing a T2 last year with a scoring average of 67.5 in two career starts. He also got a boost with a win on the Korean Tour back in May and getting his first top 20 in his last eight PGA starts at The Open.
Sepp Straka +2300
A streaky player throughout his career we saw what might be the beginning of a heater with Straka’s performance at the John Deere Classic. With three rounds of 65 and better he won that tournament followed by a T2 at The Open. He has a top 20 at TPC Twin Cities and considering the roll he’s on dropping some shekels on him at this price is good investment.
Course: TPC Twin Cities – 7,431 yards, Par 71
Located in the Minneapolis/St. Paul suburb of Blaine, TPC Twin Cities received a facelift a few years ago ahead of the Tour’s arrival, stretching it out to 7,431 yards. The course was a longtime stop on the Champions Tour with that agreement expiring in 2018. Opened in 2000 it was considered by many to be one of that Tour’s top courses. Even with the additional yardage the layout is straightforward. There are a number of water hazards spread around the property, but considering the landing areas are large by Tour standards, the water becomes a non-factor. If players stay dry there is a chance to go low with the previous four winners averaging 18-under par. Though he trailed the leader by 5-shots in the closing round, Finau rallied to win last year’s event by a record three swings.
