The most exciting competition in golf is back with the 44th Ryder Cup set to get underway on September 29 with Team USA aiming to back up its win from 2021. The Americans haven’t won consecutive Cups since the early 1990s, which is the last time they won on European soil. Team USA won the 1993 competition at The Belfry in Warwickshire, England, but dropped the last six road ventures, including the 2018 edition when the Americans were favored. Favored big to win the 2021 Ryder Cup, the Americans didn’t disappoint posting a 10-point margin at Whistling Straits, the largest since Europe was included in the competition in 1979.
The Ryder Cup format consists of 28 total matches played over three days, each worth one point. There are no extra holes, meaning if the two sides are tied after 18, each side earns a half-point. Reaching 14½ points secures a victory for Team USA with a draw allowing them to retain the Cup. On top of the trophy lifting odds, BookMaker.eu also offers bets on the correct score, the top players from each side, the top rookies, and a plethora of other wagering options. The 2023 Ryder Cup will be contested at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Italy and televised on NBC.

The top players from Europe and the United States convene every two years to compete for the Ryder Cup in a match-play tournament spanning three days. The rotation was shifted from even years to odd years with the COVID-induced postponement of the 2020 edition. Seven players who competed for Team USA in their drubbing of Europe in 2021 return, including world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who went 2-0-1 two years ago. Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas are back for the team that posted a 10-point margin.
With all 12 players ranked among the top 25 in the world, Team USA has a major advantage from that standpoint. The Europeans boast world No. 2 Rory McIlroy, No. 3 Jon Rahm and No. 4 Viktor Hovland, but their average world ranking is 29 with five players ranked No. 34 and higher.
Team USA is the favorite to retain the Cup but it hasn’t won in Europe in three decades going 0-6 since the 1993 triumph at The Belfry. In 2018 the Europeans recorded a 17½ -10½ win at Le Golf National in France as an underdog with two other home wins by seven or more points.
With an emphasis on experience, the Americans are hoping to end their lengthy drought. Automatic qualifiers Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman and Max Homa will make their first Ryder Cup appearance, and Sam Burns is the only rookie among the six captain’s pick. The other five selections by Captain Zach Johnson have 14 combined Ryder Cup appearances.
If you believe experience triumphs at the Ryder Cup, which is a good thought in such a pressure-packed environment, then Team Europe is a likely choice. While mostly transitioning to a younger generation of golfers, the Europeans boast mainstays Rory McIroy and Jon Rahm. Making his seventh Ryder Cup appearance, McIlroy is the elder statesman of all the players in attendance. He’s also looking to make up for a shoddy performance in 2021. He won just one point in Team Europe’s loss and sat out a session for the first time in his Ryder Cup career.
Adding to the experience factor is Justin Rose, who makes his sixth appearance with a 13-8-2 overall record. Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood are each appearing in the Ryder Cup for a third time.
Ryder Cup Picks
I have to admit that I’m rooting for Team USA but wouldn’t be surprised if the Europeans are able to continue their dominance on home soil. Playing in these events is huge and with the exception of a few first-timers, Team Europe has an edge. McIlroy will likely come out blazing after he faltered two years ago and Rahm is cool under pressure. For the Americans to prevail they’ll need Justin Thomas to regain form and Max Homa to come up big. Homa and Jordan Spieth excelled at the Presidents Cup leading team USA to a victory and after 30 years and six failed attempts it’s time for the Americans to hoist the Ryder Cup on European soil.
