Odds Analysis

Phil Mickelson +1307

I have no idea why Mickelson is favored this week. He has played The Greenbrier four times previously and missed the cut three times. I know Mickelson has played better this season and has been around the lead, but he is not the player he once was and I just can’t back him as a favorite.

Tony Finau +1432

I am usually on Finau because of his length, but this course doesn’t really favor big hitters. He has been in the top 15 in two of his last three starts, but I just don’t think this course fits his game.

Bubba Watson +1557

Watson is having a really good season, but like Finau, I don’t think this course suits him. He has never finished in the Top 10 on this course and I am looking elsewhere.

Webb Simpson +1709

I think Simpson should be the favorite this week. He has led or co-led this event twice, in 2011 and in 2012. Unlike Finau and Watson, his game is really suited well for this course at The Greenbrier. Simpson is my top choice to win this week.

Russell Henley +1709

I also like Henley this week. He has played well on similar courses like TPC River Highlands and the GC of Houston. Henley has played well in his last two starts at the U.S. Open and the Travelers. I give him a good chance to be in the mix on the weekend.

Xander Schauffele +2011

One of my favorite players to take in the golf matchups each week is Schauffele and I can’t leave him out of the group that has a good chance to contend. He proved last year that he can handle this course, as he got the win. The field this week is not that strong and you can make a case for Schauffele winning in back-to-back years.
Course: The Old White TPC can produce all kinds of winners, as last it was Xander Schaueffele, while the course has also seen players like Scott Stallings and Jonas Blixt get wins. The course is a par 70 that measures just 7,287 yards. The course is mainly filled with fairways lined with trees, but the fairways are big and the greens are larger than average. There are just two par 5’s so big hitters don’t have much of an edge.
