ATT Byron Nelson Golf Matchups

We typically see some of the PGA Tour’s bigger names get some work in ahead of a major, however that’s not the case this week with a weaker than normal field pegging it up at the AT&T Byron Nelson. And unfortunately the field got a little lighter earlier in the week with Jordan Speith announcing his withdrawal due to an injury. That leaves the world’s No. 2 ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler as the prohibitive favorite in the outright market. The field levels off after Scheffler with a number of golfers close in terms of odds. The only player to win this tournament at TPC Craig Ranch, K.H. Lee moved up the odds board from last year and can pull off the rare PGA Tour feat of winning the same tournament three consecutive times. Need to Know

There is a minor change to host TPC Craig Ranch reducing par to 71. The track also measures a little shorter stretching to 7,414 yards. The 12th hole was the major point of interest going from an easy par 5 to a more difficult par 4. At last year’s event there were 82 eagles on the par 5 holes. While long, the course is scoreable as past results indicate. Lee won the first playing at Craig Ranch at 25-under and bettered that by a swing last year at 26-under. Those are the two lowest to par scores in the tournament’s history that dates back to 1944. A recent trend has emerged with two-time defending champ Lee the third straight winner of Korean descent. He followed Sung Kang, who toppled the field in 2019. There was no tournament in 2020 due to COVID. Rain and storms are expected and their presence will play a role in scoring.

AT&T Byron Nelson Matchup Picks

Jason Day -125 vs. Tom Kim

I’m going out on a limb here and saying last week’s MC was an aberration. Day had been good for so long I guess some kind of regression was expected. It happened at a venue that’s yielded him success in the past, though. That makes this week more important for the Aussie ahead of the PGA Championship looking to fine tune his game. And it was solid with five top 10s among seven top 20s in seven starts before the Masters.

K.H. Lee -110 vs. Matt Kuchar

The only winner on this course, Craig Ranch is also the only course Lee has won a PGA Tour event on. It’s hard enough winning the same tournament twice so making it a three-peat is a longshot. Lee was well down the odds board last year in what most would consider a tougher field and he nailed it with a closing 63 to establish a tournament record 26-under. His matchup partner is no slouch, but it’s hard to ignore what Lee has accomplished here with a scoring average of 65.6.

Adam Hadwin -102 vs. Tom Hoge

A late entry to the field, Hadwin doesn’t have time to be concerned about last week’s MC at Quail Hollow. It was disappointing in that it came on the number as the Canadian continues to play well with a bit of inconsistency tossed in. He has two MCs in his last three starts with a runner-up showing in New Orleans mixed in, one of his four top 10s in 16 starts. The course is also a good fit for his game giving Hadwin value at his price.

Brandon Wu +108 vs. Aaron Rai

Another seemingly good fit for Craig Ranch, Wu took a different approach to his schedule. Last year he was runner-up in Mexico with a MC at Quail Hollow ahead of first visit to this lot. Another sharp outing at Vidanta last month produced a solo third and this time Wu took a week off before visiting Craig Ranch with hopes of improving his T51 from a year ago. I’m betting he does getting a price in the process.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout +113 vs. Joseph Bramlett

Putting four strong starts together starting with a T13 at THE PLAYERS, Bezuidenhout picked up his game significantly. And I still remember the run he had on the European Tour a few years ago winning back to back tournaments that elevated his status in the pro ranks. Things have been a bit tougher on the PGA side, but the South African is making strides and this could be a moment for him on a course that fits his style of play.
