With the second major of the year a week out we’ll see plenty of big names on the PGA Tour pegging it up this week at the AT&T Byron Nelson to get their final prep work in. And why not, TPC Craig Ranch was a haven for low scores in its Tour debut last season with champ K.H. Lee carding a record 25-under. The cut line last year was 6-under with 72 players advancing to the weekend. The biggest name is also the hottest player on Tour. Winner in four of his last six individual starts, Scottie Scheffler tops the board in the outright market and is featured in several tournament matchups. A number of Texans will vie for the trophy with the likes of Ryan Palmer, Jordan Spieth and Will Zalatoris looking to take advantage of a home game. Need to Know
Hosting a PGA Tour event for the first time last year, TPC Craig Ranch was an easy mark for the field. With a scoring average of 69.57, the 7,468-yard layout proved to be the easiest par 72 for a full-field tournament in over a decade. Only one player scored over par in the first two rounds with the cut line at 6-under. So, yeah, it was pretty easy for these guys. And not much has changed over the last 12 months so we could expect to see more of the same. A recent trend has emerged with defending champ Lee the second straight winner of Korean descent. He followed Sung Kang, who toppled the field in 2019. There was no tournament in 2020 due to COVID.
AT&T Byron Nelson Matchup Picks
Jordan Spieth +106 vs. Sam Burns
The only issue I have backing Spieth is that it’s been a month since he last played. I don’t anticipate that being much of an issue, though, since he won the RBC Heritage last time out and is rested up to play in his backyard. Spieth always seems to perform well in his home state with two wins in Texas, but he’s yet to claim a title in this event. I probably would have backed Spieth anyway, but catching him at plus odds in this matchup made my decision much easier.
Scottie Scheffler -126 vs. Justin Thomas
Scheffler won’t win every tournament but he’s enjoying such an incredible run that I feel like I’m losing money if I don’t back him. He has just one MC this season that coming back in October at the Shriners. Since then he’s 12 for 12 in individual tournaments with four wins and seven top-10s. You can also throw in a runner-up finish at the unofficial Hero Challenge last December. He could be looking ahead to the PGA Championship after a practice round 64 at the host venue, but I’ll still back him at a decent price in this matchup.
Kyoung Hoon Lee +104 vs. C.T. Pan
Past success on a course doesn’t guarantee future greatness. With the Tour playing at Craig Ranch for the first time last year, Lee emerged in a strong field for his first career PGA title going the lowest on a course that produced a number of low scores. There isn’t a lot to suggest another run is imminent, but Lee ended a string of three straight MCs with a T25 at the Wells Fargo Championship last week and returns on a positive note to a layout he scorched.
Will Zalatoris -122 vs. Hideki Matsuyama
One player who knows the layout better than most everyone is Zalatoris, who claimed he’s played TPC Craig Ranch “hundreds” of times. That’s not always a barometer for success, though it certainly means something. Zalatoris is the highest-ranked non-winner this season in the field and that first W is coming the way he’s played throughout his brief career. He’s on another hot streak, too, going T5-T6-T4 in his last three starts.
Jhonattan Vegas -111 vs. Si Woo Kim
One player who should be able to take advantage of the open fairways and less than penal rough is Vegas, who ranks third on Tour in distance of all drives and GIR. He earned a top-10 here last year doing what he does best and recent results suggest an even better finish. He’s finished inside the top 20 in each of his last three starts with a T4 at Corales over a month ago. I like his current and course form and his price is inviting as well.
