With the second major of the year a week out we still see plenty of big names on the PGA Tour pegging it up this week at the AT&T Byron Nelson to get their final prep work in. A number of events were cancelled last year thanks to COVID with this being one of them. A return to the schedule also brings about a new venue with TPC Craig Ranch, located just outside Dallas in McKinney, Texas, making its debut on the Tour. One big name opting out is world No. 1 Dustin Johnson leaving a mad scramble at the top of the odds board. Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau top the list with Dallas native Jordan Spieth looking to continue his recent surge. All three are featured in matchups. Need to Know
While TPC Craig Ranch will host a PGA Tour event for the first time, it’s no stranger to a few players in the field. The Korn Ferry Tour Championship was held here in 2008 and 2012 with upwards of 10 players competing in the last KFT event. The layout will be different than it was back then. The course is stretched to 7,468 yards at par 72. The two KFT events played at par 71. With golfers facing a lot of unknowns on a new track ball-strikers are usually rewarded. The course should be more difficult than Trinity Forest was but still the stock layout isn’t going to scare the pros. The two KFT winners at this joint were 16-under and 17-under when it played par 71. And with favorable conditions we are likely to see some low numbers this week
ATT Byron Nelson Matchup Picks
Jordan Spieth -120 vs. Scottie Scheffler
It’s safe to say Spieth has broken out of the slump he was in. And now he’s playing what amounts to a home game. That doesn’t mean Spieth is going to win this matchup, but I like him to continue his run of torrid play now that he knows it can disappear at any time. He’s been off since a T3 at the Masters, which could squelch the momentum he built with five top-5s in his last eight events. But I’m not banking on that. I’ll take Spieth thanks to his recent surge.
Marc Leishman -115 vs. Ryan Palmer
Leishman is one player who actually played a tournament at Craig Ranch, earning him some street cred along the way. He placed among the top-10 at the 2008 KFT tournament and he comes in on a recent tear posting a T5 at the Masters and teaming with Cameron Smith to win the Zurich Open. His accuracy, solid short game and strong putting set him up for a nice showing and I’ll back him in this matchup.
Aaron Wise -115 vs. Luke List
Wise has quietly put together a strong season; strong enough to qualify for the PGA Championship with his top-10 at last week’s Wells Fargo Championship. He’s enjoyed success on courses with similar grass surfaces winning the 2018 Byron Nelson at Trinity Forest Golf Club by shooting 23-under. He has five top-20s in 15 starts this season, including a runner-up finish in the Mayakoba. He has been up and down, but when he’s up he’s good. I’m betting another up tournament and matchup win.
Daniel Berger -135 vs. Hideki Matsuyama
He hasn’t teed it up in a month so Berger should be well rested. Hopefully the break doesn’t interrupt a strong run of form. He was T13 at the RBC Heritage last time out, his sixth top-20 of 2021. He measures out well in stat categories that should play well at Craig Ranch. He’s among the top-20 in adjusted scoring, par-3 scoring, total driving, greens in regulation and strokes gained: putting. He comes at a steep price against the most recent major champion, but Matsuyama is still celebrating his Masters win.
Will Zalatoris -105 vs. Matthew Fitzpatrick
Since Zalatoris has been so good his MC last week came as a surprise. Was it a slight hiccup or have the good times come to an end? Hard to say, but I can’t give up on a guy who has nine top-20s in 17 starts this season. And with it being a home game for Zalatoris, he’s a nice bounce back candidate this week.
