Serving as the final tune up before the second major of the season, the PGA Tour assembles just outside Dallas for this week’s AT&T Byron Nelson with a strong field ready to navigate TPC Craig Ranch. Following a two-week break Scottie Scheffler looks to continue his scorching run and is positioned as the betting favorite and the only player with shorter than 10/1 odds on the opening PGA line. Seven of the top-15 golfers in the OWGR are set to peg it up looking to knock of defending champ K.H. Lee, who is positioned well down the odds board. Lee carded a closing 66 to win by three swings in the first Tour event held at the venue located in McKinley, TX and he’s trying to become the first repeat winner since Tom Watson won his third straight in 1980. Odds Analysis
Tommy Fleetwood +3500
One part of the game that will stand out this week is how well the field putts. Given the open fairways and limited number of hazards it’s sure to be a birdie-fest, and Fleetwood has been strong with the flat stick ranking eighth on Tour in strokes gained: putting. He’s also played well of late with four top-20s in his last five stroke-play events. And the one that wasn’t inside the top-20 was a T22 at THE PLAYERS. They are some picks higher on the odds board that will attract attention, but Fleetwood’s recent results and strong putting give me hope.
Scottie Scheffler +900
I backed off Scheffler at the Masters and it proved to be a fatal move. No one can be that hot for that long, right? We’ll see if Scheffler is up to the task as he tees it up for the first time since missing the cut at the Zurich. We can blame his partner for that. Put Scheffler in an individual stroke-play field and I’ll take my chances with the hottest golfer in the world.
Adam Scott +4500
Like I said, putting will be the difference this week and Scott is another player boasting strong numbers in that area. He ranks among the top-20 in SG:putting and has put some solid results together. He placed among the top-5 at the CJ Cup earlier in the season and also had a T4 at the Genesis in February. A Saturday 80 doomed him at the Masters otherwise Scott would be contending, so he’s not far off.
Jordan Spieth +1500
Two of Spieth’s 13 career titles have come in Texas so I think it’s safe to say he likes golfing in his home state. He’s been on break since winning the RBC Heritage almost a month ago and despite going 13-under he continues to struggle with his putter. One thing that helps is to know the terrain and Spieth is familiar with the layout. If the odds were a little bit longer I’d jump on Spieth in a second. I’m still taking my chances with this pick hoping that some home cooking does the trick.
Will Zalatoris +2200
Zalatoris indeed has the game to contend this week and he’s admittedly played Craig Ranch “hundreds” of times. Nobody knows the layout better, and while that guarantees nothing once the field tees off, it’s certainly something to consider. I’d probably back him if that was the only positive, but throw in three straight T6 or better finishes and some impressive stats in areas that will certainly come into play, the Z-man looks like a strong value pick.
Course: TPC Craig Ranch – 7,468 yards, Par 72
TPC Craig Ranch made its debut as a PGA Tour host last year continuing a rather nomadic existence for the tournament. Craig Ranch is locked in for the next four years, though, after positive reviews from players at last year’s event. It’s not an overwhelming layout and past experiences suggest we could see some low scores. Lee didn’t disappoint last year with a tournament record 25-under. Prior to hosting in 2021, Craig Ranch welcomed the Korn Ferry Tour Championship in 2008 and 2012 with a few notables taking part. There is plenty of room down the fairways and minimal rough that will give hitters an edge. The greens are firm and several reachable par 4s offer a chance to make up strokes.
