A number of tournaments on the PGA Tour are back on the schedule after being cancelled last year due to COVID. One of those is this week’s AT&T Byron Nelson, which will be competed for the first time at TPC Craig Ranch just outside of Dallas. With the year’s second major on the horizon we have a solid field of players pegging it up headlined by Dallas native Jordan Spieth, who broke out of a slump with a win in the Texas Open in April. Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau opened as the betting favorites and are the only players with shorter than 10/1 odds. Sung Kang, who triumphed in the 2019 edition, is a longshot to become the first repeat winner since Tom Watson won his third straight in 1980. Odds Analysis
Marc Leishman +3300
There’s a lot to like about Leishman heading into this tournament and his price is just one positive. His game is in a good spot after teaming with Cameron Smith to win the Zurich Classic. He also finished among the top five prior to that in the Masters and has the metrics that will seemingly play well on this course. He’s one of a few players in the field to tackle this course, though it’s been a few years. Leishman earned a top-10 at the KFT Championship held at Craig Ranch in 2008.
Keith Mitchell +7000
Another guy playing well offering plenty of value is Mitchell, who was in contention at last week’s Wells Fargo Championship before settling for a T3. He’s enjoyed some success recently with a T4 at the Zurich and a top-20 at the Texas Open last month. He’s another big hitter who can take advantage of the spacious landing areas and his putting has improved. He may be better used in an alternate market, but I like how things are playing out for him in search of a second PGA title.
Scottie Scheffler +2000
One player with an edge in course knowledge is Scheffler, who grew up in Dallas and played collegiately at Texas. That probably makes him a popular pick this week since the venue is new to most in the field. Scheffler first played the Byron Nelson as a teenager finishing T22 and the familiar surroundings could be the difference with so many unknowns in store this week.
Jordan Spieth +1000
I typically don’t go this high up the odds board, but when talking about familiar surroundings and recent form it’s hard not to like Spieth. Not only did he win in his home state last month he followed his Texas Open title with a podium finish at the Masters, his fifth top-5 in his last eight starts. He hasn’t teed it up in a month so hopefully the break didn’t interrupt his momentum. Maybe he was just waiting to return to an event that he enjoys playing.
Will Zalatoris +2500
Did the good times come to an end or was last week’s MC just a minor bump in the road? Hard to say, but with a new course on the schedule and some time to reflect on his impressive Tour run, I believe Zalatoris will be back in the saddle this week. With some of the bigger names in the field looking ahead, this is a good time to back Will in a home game.
Course: TPC Craig Ranch – 7,468 yards, Par 72
Located just outside Dallas in McKinney, TPC Craig Ranch hosts a PGA Tour event for the first time. It’s not an overwhelming layout and past experiences suggest we could see some low scores. First time venues ahead of a major over the past several years have seen some impressive scoring numbers. This isn’t the first rodeo for Craig Ranch, though it has been a while. The Korn Ferry Tour Championship played here in 2008 and 2012 with a few notables taking part. There is plenty of room down the fairways that should give big hitters an edge. The greens are firm and several reachable par 4s offer a chance to make up strokes. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the winner hit the 20-under mark.
