ATT Pebble Beach Pro-Am Golf Matchups

It’s back to more familiar surroundings when the PGA Tour heads to the Monterey Peninsula and breathtaking Pebble Beach Golf Links for this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The am part is back in play bringing with it a three course rotation. Both were scrubbed over COVID concerns last year. To guarantee the full field of pros and their celebrity partners complete 18 holes in each of the first three days, Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula Country Club will all be in use with the cut down field finishing on the iconic Pebble Beach layout. The field was trimmed a bit following the WD of Will Zalatoris, who opened as the second favorite. Patrick Cantlay tops the odds board in the outright market with defending champion Daniel Berger also at the top of the odds board and both are featured prominently in tournament matchups Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of matchup betting odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know

Along with Pebble Beach the field will also contend with the Monterey Peninsula Course and Spyglass Hill over the first three days. All three are short with only Spyglass Hill (7,041) playing over 7,000 yards. Distance off the tee is not a factor, which brings the field closer together. However, the courses seem to fit certain players. The Monterey layout is regarded as the easiest of the three producing more eagles and allowing players to make up strokes. And with the cut after 54 holes, players can absorb a poor round and still be in contention for Sunday. Those making it to Sunday get 36 holes on Pebble Beach, a 6,972-yard, par-72 layout that’s among the shortest on Tour. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, though. Approach shots have to find small greens that are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers through coastal winds.

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am Matchup Picks

Maverick McNealy -115 vs. Seamus Power

A Stanford product and Bay Area native I’m sure McNealy has played these courses a time or two before turning pro. And his results since getting a check for playing golf aren’t too shabby. He placed among the top-5 in each of his two career starts with a runner-up finish last season. He seems to thrive in his home state earning a runner-up finish in Napa to start the season, one of his four top-25s.

Lanto Griffin -105 vs. Mackenzie Hughes

We don’t hear a lot about Griffin but he’s been a pretty good golfer over his career. He has only one victory, which is probably why he hasn’t reached the mainstream in the public’s eye. But those who pay attention to the Tour know the guy can play. He’s demonstrated that so far this season with three top-10s in his eight starts while playing the weekend seven times. He grabbed a podium finish at The American Express a few weeks ago and closed the FIO with a 65. He also placed among the top-10 here last year and carries some value at his price.

Jordan Spieth -120 vs. Justin Rose

What kept Spieth sane during his struggles was knowing he could dominate at this event. Now that he’s apparently over that period of poor play can we expect better things from the former champ? It was around this time last year that Spieth emerged from a slump with a top-5 in Phoenix followed by a familiar showing at Pebble Beach. He was T3 last year, his fifth top-10 while going 9 for 9 in this tournament. That’s something you just can’t overlook.

Tom Hoge -120 vs. Denny McCarthy

I may be a little overzealous backing Hoge, but I have my reasons. He’s very familiar with this event making every start since 2015, and the pro-am format does take some getting used to. He’s played well recently finishing as runner-up at The American Express for his second top-4 in his last four starts. And he had a breakthrough of sorts here last year with a personal best T12 proving that course knowledge is beneficial.

Michael Thompson -105 vs. Matthew Jones

Another solid player this season is Thompson, who rebounded from his only MC to finish T11 at the Farmers for his third top-15 in his last five starts. He didn’t overwhelm earlier this season but he’s been consistent going 8 for 9 with his best results since the start of the year. He’s been a regular at this event since 2009 earning a top-10 in 2019. There are few players that offer value, but at his current price Thompson is one of them.
