AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am Golf Matchups

The Monterey Peninsula and breathtaking Pebble Beach Golf Links play host to this week’s stop on the PGA Tour, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am. The am part of the tournament has been shelved due to COVID meaning the full field of 156 golfers will tee it up over two courses this week instead of the usual three associated with this event. Dustin Johnson, the biggest name originally in the field, withdrew earlier in the week leaving the field wide open. That also sets up a plethora of intriguing tournament matchups. Need to Know

Due to the format change only two courses will be used this week. Pebble Beach will host three rounds including the weekend while Spyglass Hill will be used once by each player on either Thursday or Friday. The cut line has moved up a day as well taking place after 36 holes instead of 54. Both courses are similar in length but offer their own set of challenges. Distance off the tee is not a factor on either layout, which brings the field closer together. However, the courses seem to fit certain players. At just over 7,000 yards, Pebble Beach is the shortest course on Tour. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, though. Approach shots have to find small greens that are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers through coastal winds. Spyglass Hill isn’t a gimme either. At 7,041 yards on the scorecard the track has yielded an average over-par score of 72.2 over the last 10 years.

ATT Pebble Beach Pro Am Matchup Picks

Max Homa +115 vs. Cameron Davis

Always in search of the value play I find myself backing Homa for a number of reasons, and none of them are the plus-odds price, though that did figure in my thinking. Homa is familiar with the area and the courses having played collegiately at Cal. He’s also posted a pair of top-15s in his last two starts here. Recent form is strong with three finishes among the top-21 in his last four starts. His T42 last week in Phoenix was disappointing and should serve as motivation.

Maverick McNealy -105 vs. Patton Kizzire

Still a youngster on Tour, McNealy has made his presence known. However, he’s still searching for that maiden victory. It may not happen this week, but I don’t need an outright win. He’s been up and down this season, but in the five tournaments McNealy has completed he’s finished among the top-21 in four of them. And he returns to Pebble Beach after claiming a T5 last year. He didn’t play poorly in the MCs, just not good enough to advance. I’m betting on that changing this week.

Phil Mickelson +110 vs. Francesco Molinari

Given Mickelson’s history at Pebble Beach I feel like I’m losing money if I don’t throw down on him. Despite recent results on the PGA Tour we know Lefty still has game by his showings on the Champions Tour. And he’s headed to a place where he thrives. Along with his record tying five wins, Lefty also has a pair of runner-up and third-place showings, and he’s a big fan of the poa annua greens. At plus-odds in this matchup Lefty is too good to pass up.

Matt Jones +105 vs. Cameron Tringale

There are a number of players who have enjoyed success at Pebble Beach and Jones is among them. Exactly half of his six top-25 finishes here doubled as a top-10 with the best coming last year when Jones grabbed a share of fifth. He’s been good at this event and has made the cut in eight consecutive tournaments overall, which is good enough for me to back the plus odds in this matchup.

Jordan Spieth +165 vs. Patrick Cantlay

Could his play last week in Phoenix be what turns Spieth around? I don’t know, but it’s a start. A brilliant third-round 61 had him in contention on Sunday settling for a T4. The game is all about confidence and Spieth has to have loads of that heading to an event where he’s been good. He won here in 2017 and has seven top-25s in eight starts. He’s a heavy underdog against the tournament favorite in this matchup, but I like Spieth’s chances. And I really like the price.
