The PGA Tour moves up the California coast this week with Pebble Beach Golf Links playing host to its namesake event, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. With the tournament tabbed a Signature Event we’ll see some big names that haven’t appeared in a while. Rory McIlroy is making his Tour season debut while world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler makes his tournament debut. And not surprisingly two of the game’s biggest attractions are positioned atop the odds board as the only players with shorter than 12/1 odds on the opening golf betting line. A change in status also brings a change in format. The 80-player field will use two courses – Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill – instead of the customary three. Also, amateurs jump off the track after two rounds. Justin Rose is back to defend the title he won by three-swings last year. With one of the strongest fields assembled, Rose is well down the odds board, though stranger things have happened at the outset of the 2024 season. Odds Analysis
Max Homa +1950
A native Californian and former Cal-Berkley star, Homa has expressed joy for playing in his home state. And the numbers back him up. His two wins last season were in Napa and San Diego and he’s pretty good at Pebble Beach with a run of T7-T14-T10 over his last three starts here. He also started this season with a pair of top 15s, including a T13 in his title defense at the Farmers Insurance Open.
Beau Hossler +6050
The run of improbable winners at the start of the season continued last week and it’s bound to stop at some point, right? Well, this is the likely event with a number of high-caliber players. However, early season results make a player like Hossler an intriguing pick. He’s yet to win on Tour but he’s coming off a solid T6 at the FIO and some of his greatest moments have taken place at Pebble Beach with a solo third two years ago and T11 in 2023.
J.T. Poston +5250
Golf is golf, right? You have to keep telling yourself that when playing a tournament for the first time in six years. Poston is recognized as one of the better foul-weather players on Tour and he’s likely going to get the chance to show off this week. It doesn’t hurt that he arrives in fine form finishing T5 at The Sentry, 6th at the Sony Open and T11 in the first pro-am event at the AMX. I tend to stay from players with little experience on a particular layout, but his game is soaring and he’s a good fit for this event.
Xander Schauffele +1225
Another player making a rare appearance on the northern California coast, Schauffele also arrives in fine form after recording three top 10s in his first three starts. He’s seemingly getting closer to ending a drought that hasn’t seen him win since the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open. The thing about Schauffele is that he always seems to be in contention and catching a break here or there could be all the difference. His strong play will help create his own breaks and his price is nice for a play as good as he is.
Jordan Spieth +1685
Few if any players have had as much success at Pebble Beach than Spieth. He’s guaranteed to play four rounds with the reduced field, but back in the cut era he played the weekend in all 11 starts getting a win in 2017 along with a runner-up and T3 among his six top 10s. He started the 2024 season in style earning a podium finish at The Sentry in his lone start, so he should be well-rested to attack a venue that’s yielded him positive results.
Course: Pebble Beach Golf Links (host) – 6,972 yards, Par 72
A smaller field means no cut line and one course used in past events is no longer needed. The field will navigate Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill over the first two days with the iconic Pebble Beach layout hosting the final two rounds. At just under 7,000 yards Pebble Beach is one of the shortest courses on Tour with wide open fairways that don’t pose a threat. Accuracy off the tee isn’t a problem, but approach shots have to find small greens that are surrounded by strategically placed bunkers. Spyglass Hill is the toughest of the two with additional length stretching it to 7,041 yards. However, playing along the coast can always be hazardous and early forecasts call for a chance of rain and gusty winds.
