Much like the tournament the alternate field Barbasol Championship is being played alongside, it’s co-sanctioned by the PGA and DP World Tours bringing some young talent from across the pond into the mix. Played at the same time as The Open since debuting in 2015, this year’s edition moves up a week with the winner, if not already qualified, earning a spot in the field at St. Andrews. With the game’s biggest names in Scotland this week, the field is trimmed down with odds suggesting a wide-open competition. Recently turned pro Christopher Gotterup emerged as the outright favorite after bagging two top-10s in his first five starts. Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky, hosts for a fourth straight time with scoring off the charts in the previous three. All of the favorites are featured in matchups with updated odds available at BookMaker.eu when you’re ready to make a wager.

Need to Know
These alternate field events are ripe for the taking for some young stud looking to make his mark.
Roughly one-third of the 156-player field competes on the DP World Tour giving the event an influx of talent. The straightforward layout at Keene Trace has led to some phenomenal scoring over the previous three editions with the winner at 21-under or better. Stretched to 7,328 yards it was the easiest par 72 on Tour in its first two years and second easiest last year. The 2019 field carded a Tour record 114 eagles. Keene Trace has consistently placed among the top-five in the state’s course rankings, but has yet to get the better of the field since joining the rotation in 2018.
Barbasol Championship Matchup Picks
Christopher Gotterup -103 vs. Mark Hubbard
This is the type of tournament right up Gotterup’s alley, using a reference from a different sport. But make no mistake the kid can play and he’s shown off in his first few professional starts. Here’s an interesting tidbit to consider: five golfers who have yet to record a top-10 rank inside the top 125 of the FedExCup. Gotterup has two, including a T7 in Puerto Rico in his first pro start. His latest was a T4 in the Deere Classic last week when he finished 17-under.
Adam Svensson -113 vs. John Huh
He’s been solid if not spectacular over the past few months making Svensson my pick in this matchup. He’s played through in his last six starts closing the past three among the top-25. Inside the top-100 in the FedExCup standings he’s one of the highest ranked in the field using his efficient tee-to-green play. He’s seemingly a lock to make the playoff and he’s playing better on the lead up giving me the confidence to back him.
Chesson Hadley +127 vs. Hayden Buckley
One of the more recognizable names in the field, Hadley looks to build off his best run of the season that includes his best finishes in his last two starts. It was a horrible opening with 14 MCs in his first 20 starts, including a run of eight in a row. But he’s been around long enough to know slumps end. He was 10-under at the Byron Nelson in May followed by a top-5 at the Travelers last month. He enters a week after three rounds of 67 lifted him to a T10 at the Deere Classic.
Taylor Pendrith -129 vs. Hank Lebioda
It’s been a frustrating few months for Pendrith with injury and COVID keeping him off the course. And it couldn’t have come at a worse time. You have to be concerned about his inactivity since he hasn’t played since nabbing a T13 at THE PLAYERS in March. That was also his best finish in 2022, so maybe the good vibes will carry over. Pendrith recovered from a rib injury and was set to play last week before COVID took him down. Getting back in the saddle is just what he needs.
Kelly Kraft -104 vs. Ryan Moore
His lone visit to Keene Trace was a memorable one. Back in 2019 Kraft set a course record with a third-round 61 finishing at 25-under one-shot behind Jim Herman for a solo second. That’s not the only reason why I’m backing him, though. His best golf of the season has taken place over the last few months where he’s 5 of 6 with three top-25s.
