With most of the golf world in England for The Open Championship this week there is a need for another tournament. And the PGA Tour gives us the Barracuda Championship to fill the void as an alternate field event. With the season nearing its conclusion valuable FedExCup points are out there for bubble players to improve their standing. Like last year members of the DP World Tour are invited to play with the expanded field assembling at Tahoe Mountain Club. This is the only PGA Tour stop featuring the Modified Stableford scoring system, which credits points based on how players perform at each hole. For example, an eagle is worth five points, a birdie is worth two points and no points are awarded for par. Points are deducted for plus-strokes on a hole. Stephan Jaeger opened as the betting favorite though the odds suggest a wide-open field. Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of betting odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Odds Analysis
Sam Bennett +3000
This is exactly the kind of tournament a guy like Bennett can flourish in. since turning pro earlier this year Bennett has been consistent with just one MC in six starts with fields much stronger. And he proved in Augusta that he can hang with the big boys turning in the low amateur result and finishing T16. He also racked up a T20 in Canada and placed inside the top 30 at the Rocket Mortgage classic earlier this month.
Troy Merritt +9000
It’s almost like Merritt is a fixture at this event and he arrives with a boost of confidence after ending a streak of five straight MCs with back-to-back finishes of T17 at the Rocket Mortgage and John Deere Classics. He played well last week but not well enough to reach the weekend in Scotland, which could be a blessing since he had a little more time to return to the states. He had consecutive runner-up showings here in 2019 and 2020 while finishing in the top half of the field in 2021. It’s always a good idea in a tournament like this to take a look further down the odds list.
Keith Mitchell +1800
Just when I say it’s a good idea to look down the odds board here I am back at the top with the second favorite. With the best players competing overseas Mitchell is the highest ranked player in the field at No. 62 in the OWGR. He had a stretch earlier this year with a pair of top 5s in three starts and he’s collected four top 10s this season. Just last month he was T20 at the U.S. Open
Justin Suh +3300
Another young player looking to make his mark on Tour, Suh has played solid golf while still searching for that signature moment. He placed inside the top 30 at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship with a best finish of T5 at the Honda Classic. He’s made the cut in his last six starts with a T16 at the Charles Schwab Classic his best showing. Already proving he can compete with the best players this is a chance for Suh to get the desired result.
Erik van Rooyen +10000
Finishing the tournament with 40 or more points is a big deal – only two players did it last year. So, why not back the player who set a points record with 50 in his 2021 victory? It’s been a struggle for van Rooyen this year with more MCs than made, but a glimmer of hope was breaking a streak of seven straight MCs at the Scottish Open last week that included a second round 63. At least he’s been consistent and the game hasn’t completely gone off the rails giving me hope he can find his form with a big payday waiting.
Course: Tahoe Mountain Club – 7,480 yards, Par 71
After more than 20 years at the Montreux Golf and Country Club in Reno, the Barracuda moved to its new digs for the 2020 edition. One thing that hasn’t changed is the elevation. Situated in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Old Greenwood Course at the Tahoe Mountain Club plays at nearly 7,500 yards, which seems like a hefty amount. But that number is irrelevant since the altitude allows balls to fly through air. A number of short par 4s are perfect for the Modified Stableford system giving players a chance to collect points and make up ground. Conversely, the par 3s can be nasty with tricky, rolling greens along with strategically-placed bunkers. And as a reminder, players want to be on the plus side in this scoring system.
