Black Desert Championship PGA Matchup Odds

The PGA Tour returns to Utah for the first time in six decades welcoming a new tournament to the FedExCup Fall season, the Black Desert Championship. With the host course not even two years old, the field of 132 golfers will all get a first look at the Black Desert Resort layout with no one having an advantage. That’s likely why the odds in the outright market are all over the place. Keith Mitchell is listed as the betting favorite and the only golfer with shorter than 20/1 odds on the opening line. The 54-hole leader last week, Mitchell came close to ending a more than five year title drought before settling for a share of third. Odds suggest a wide-open field with value found further down the odds board. Sanderson Farms Championship winner Kevin Yu went off at around +11000 making some folks a good chunk of change. Need to Know

Those who competed in one or both of the first two fall events will see a much different layout in southern Utah. The Black Desert Resort was carved into lava rock with the 7,371-yard, par-71 course having wavy fairways and penal OB terrain. The good news for the pros is that it is a resort course boasting generous fairways and inviting greens with few obstacles so there’s a good chance we see plenty of low scores. The signature is the black lava that lines nearly every fairway supplying the course with its name. Trees can’t grow in lava so a few strategically placed bunkers offer some resistance. Ball-striking and iron play will be tops on the menu this week, though the course is just long enough to allow big hitters to make a run on a few holes.

Black Desert Championship Matchup Picks

Michael Thorbjornsen -105 vs. Ryan Fox

I backed Thorbjornsen in the outright for a reason and I’m using that in this matchup. His game appears to be a good fit for the layout, though we won’t really know until play starts. It is after all the first ever event on this course. Strong and accurate off the tee with a soft touch on the greens, Thorbjornsen was a solid T8 in Jackson last week opening with a 63. He was sub-70 in every round and appears more settled in his rookie season.

Lucas Glover +100 vs. Patrick Rodgers

You have to ride em while they’re hot and Glover is smoking after finishing T3 at the Sanderson Farms Championship. His masterful putting led to four rounds of 68 or lower and he missed a playoff by one shot. He was also the most accurate hitter off the tee last week making him a leader in two important areas entering this event. There’s no guarantee his run continues but there are no signs that it won’t.

Patton Kizzire -115 vs. Bud Cauley

Nobody has enjoyed a better start to the fall season than Kizzire, who followed up his win at the Procore Championship with a T11 at the Sanderson Farms. And he was in contention in Jackson with only a third round 70 putting him off the pace. Going back to the regular season Kizzire excelled in similar events with top 10s in the Barracuda Championship and Myrtle Beach Classic.

Jacob Bridgeman -115 vs. Ben Kohles

Bridgeman has played solid golf this year but only recently has started to see the results with his game becoming more consistent. Too many times we’d see a low score followed by a higher number keeping him from contending. That was evident at the Procore Championship when he opened with a 69 and was cut a day later following a 79. However, he placed among the top 20 in three of his past four starts including a T11 in Jackson when he was 70 or better in every round.

Beau Hossler -120 vs. Ben Griffin

Hossler came as close as he could to picking up his maiden Tour victory only to fall in a playoff at the Sanderson Farms Championship. It was an inspiring outing after a MC the week prior at the Procore Championship and was his second finish among the top 12 in his last three starts. I’m counting on him continuing his run after coming so close.
