A new tournament in the rotation sends the PGA Tour to southern Utah this week for the inaugural Black Desert Championship, hosted by the Black Desert Resort in Ivins, UT. The Tour makes it first visit to the Beehive State since 1963 with a few Utahns sprinkled in the light field of competitors. Keith Mitchell had the 54-hole lead last week at the Sanderson Farms Championship and couldn’t hold on falling into a tie for third. That was enough to convince oddsmakers that he should be at the top of the odds board for this tournament. Former BYU standouts Zac Jones and Peter Kuest are also scheduled to peg it up. Mitchell is the only player on the opening PGA odds with shorter than 20/1 odds leaving plenty of value on the course. Last week’s winner Kevin Yu went off at +11000. Odds Analysis
Patton Kizzire +5000
It’s been a good start of the fall season for Kizzire, who followed up his win at the Procore Championship with a T11 last week in Jackson. And he’s been a standout in similar events going back to his T8 at the Barracuda Championship and T10 earlier in the year at the Myrtle Beach Classic. He still needs strong results to climb the FedExCup standings and he has a good chance this week.
Matt McCarty +4000
It’s not easy moving up the ranks. Despite all his success on the Korn Ferry Tour, there must have been some nervous moments at the Sanderson Farms Championship for McCarty, who made his Tour debut. He did compete in the 2022 US Open but I’m counting that. The kid can golf claiming the points lead in the KFT with a string of three wins in six starts this summer and with the jitters of a T63 out of the way I expect better things.
Keith Mitchell +1600
The leader after three rounds last week, Mitchell failed to hold on shooting a closing 70 to finish one swing off the pace. It was a frustrating end with his first win in more than five years in his sights. But he has an opportunity this week if he looks at the bigger picture. He’s been playing some of his best golf recently with a pair of 12th place finishes ahead of his podium in Jackson.
Michael Thorbjornsen +3500
No precedents have been set on this course since it’s essentially brand new. However, one player who seemingly has the skillset to master the layout is Thorbjornsen, who’s displayed accurate driving and strong putting. Those two parts of the game will be critical this week. He’s also settling into his role as a Tour rookie finishing T8 last week after opening with a 63. If his price was a little higher I would have no problem backing him. but I’ll do it anyway.
Erik Van Rooyen +3300
Another player with solid results in similar field events, Van Rooyen presents as a good bet. His four top 10 finishes came at the Mexico Open, Cognizant Classic, Myrtle Beach Classic and the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He also had a nice tune up last month with a T12 at the DP World Tour’s Irish Open where his consistent kept him in contention.
Course: Black Desert Resort – 7,371 yards, Par 71
The PGA Tour returns to Utah for the first time in 60 years with the Black Desert Resort hosting. It is a brand new course that opened in sections. The front nine was ready for play in November 2022 with the back nine getting tested about six months later. The course was blasted out of lava rock with wavy, undulating fairways. Keep the ball on the grass is the most important thing with rocks playing a big role on errant shots. At least the fairways are wide leaving some wiggle room and there are few obstacles facing the field. At under 7,400 yards it does allow for big hitters to take a shot but also plays to accuracy. Larger greens also put an emphasis on putting. While in its infancy the course has already been recognized as one of the best in Utah and will play host to an LPGA event as well next year.
