BMW Championship Golf Matchups

The FedExCup playoff field has been whittled down to the top 70 with those remaining gathering this week at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware for the no-cut BMW Championship. The second-leg of the playoffs is merely a stepping stone to next week’s Tour Championship and several players will be looking to find their stroke after subpar outings in Memphis. Jon Rahm opened as the outright favorite but has been overtaken by Rory McIlroy, who missed the cut at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler also missed the cut and is positioned as the third favorite. Those three are guaranteed a spot among the top-30 to compete next week but others aren’t, making this an important tournament. Patrick Cantlay won last year on his way to the FedExCup title and any of the now 68 golfers – Cameron Smith and Tommy Fleetwood are out – has the potential to win making for some interesting matchups. Need to Know

First of all the South Course at Wilmington Country Club is a new venue for everyone in the field. With the Tour making its first stop in Delaware there is no competitive advantage. Weather damage in 2021 necessitated a redesign adding length for a beefy par 71 that stretches to 7,534 yards. Tree-lined fairways are wide enough to offer comfort for big hitters and above average-sized greens put an emphasis on putting. No cut makes it harder for those below the cutoff point to advance, but it has happened five times in the last two BMW events. And players won’t be undone by a poor opening knowing they are guaranteed 72 holes. There are obstacles in the form of strategically-placed bunkers, a few water hazards and thick rough, but overall it doesn’t appear to be a difficult test for the pros

BMW Championship Matchup Picks

Tony Finau -117 vs. Justin Thomas

Finding magic with his putter made Finau a force over the last few months, and that’s an area that should play a big role in how things turn out. A sluggish start to the season turned around in May with a T2 at the Mexico Open and he’s placed inside the top-5 in six of his past 11 starts. He also enters on a major heater with back to back wins at the 3M Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic followed by a T5 last week. I’m going to stick with the hot hand.

Collin Morikawa +120 vs. Sungjae Im

Every time Morikawa pegs it up you feel like he has a chance. He’s offered at a great price partly because of recent performance, but it’s also why I’m backing him. Im has been a machine while Morikawa has three MCs in his last five starts. But the two he finished were pretty good with a T5 in both the U.S. Open and FedEx St. Jude Championship. And he’s a superb ball-striker, which will play a role on a new course making me happy to throw down at plus odds.

Max Homa +121 vs. Corey Conners

Homa is another matchup underdog with tremendous upside. An under-the-radar player, he doubled his career win total with a pair of titles this season and you can say he officially joined the party with 13 top-25s in 22 starts. The next hurdle is a strong playoff showing and I have a feeling Max is up to the challenge. He finished outside the top-35 in every playoff tournament, including a T42 last week, but he’s on an even playing field and riding a strong season.

Patrick Cantlay +101 vs. Scottie Scheffler

For a while there it looked like Scheffler wouldn’t lose. Well, he hasn’t been nearly as good lately with two of his four season MCs coming in his last three starts. He’s still a formidable threat, however Cantlay rose to the occasion last year and his run of six straight top-15s ended in Memphis. He’s been as consistent as anyone on Tour and he has the game that translates easily on this course. Now he just has to do it.

Lucas Glover -109 vs. Trey Mullinax

Glover feels like he’s playing with house money after climbing from 121st in the points race to 34th and advancing on the strength of his T3 last week in Memphis. He has some work to do in order to qualify for the Tour Championship, but that should be nothing after making the leap into the top-70. And that display came out of nowhere, with nothing better than a T40 and four MCs in his previous eight starts. His skill set will be on display and with no pressure he should be relaxed. We saw what happened in Memphis.
