BMW Championship Golf Odds

The FedExCup Playoffs continue this week with the top-70 golfers in the point standings making their way to Delaware and the Wilmington Country Club for the first time for the BMW Championship. We expected it was going to happen eventually and last week it did when Will Zalatoris earned his maiden PGA Tour victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. That wasn’t enough to move him to the top of the odds board, though, as Jon Rahm has that honor on the opening PGA line. Some big names missed the cut last week and two of them are positioned right behind Rahm with Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler next on the list. We don’t have to worry about a cut this week giving every player four rounds to do damage. Patrick Cantlay defends the title he won in a six-hole playoff last year when the event was held in Baltimore. Odds Analysis

Patrick Cantlay +1751

A number of players are looking to bounce back after disappointing showings last week. With a spot in the second playoff tournament already locked up I guess it would be easy to take a deep breath and relax. Cantlay was one of those players. Though he made the cut he failed to keep up over the final 36 holes claiming a T57 to end his run of top-15s at six. The defending champ has a unique set of skills that translates to nearly every course and I expect to see him contend.

Tyrrell Hatton +4450

We need to look at the big picture with Hatton. He doesn’t have a win this season and it’s been a few years since his only PGA Tour title. But consistency is huge giving him a chance to at least smell the finish line every week. He’s missed only two cuts in 18 starts, and though that’s not an issue it shows how solid he’s been. He has good distance and accuracy off the tee and he’s a strong putter, which will help on the oversized greens. Heck I’d even back Hatton in an alternate market because he’s been good, just not great.

Rory McIlroy +975

Like I mentioned with Cantlay some of the bigger names higher up in the standings had an off week in Memphis. Like the defending FedExCup champ I suspect McIlroy will be back in tune with his game. He hadn’t played since The Open, which could have been a factor, but with a few rounds to chisel off the rust I can easily see him back in the saddle. Prior to last week he hadn’t missed a cut since the Texas Open. And all he did after that was grab a runner-up at the Masters.

Xander Schauffele +2101

Though he’s never won a major Schauffele always seems to up his game in the bigger moments while playing better around playoff time. He’s just a month removed from consecutive victories and his showing last week was his worst in four months. Over that nine-start stretch he has three wins and seven top-15s making him a threat any time he pegs it up.

Jordan Spieth +3506

You might be sensing a trend here. Of all the players in this section none finished inside the top-30 last week while all of them have had varying levels of success. Spieth is another one who struggled in Memphis with a MC, just his second since winning the RBC Heritage after his MC at the Masters. Spieth has also had trouble in the playoffs posting one top-10 in his last five starts. However, taking into account the newness of the venue and what it offers, Spieth’s game looks like as good a fit as anyone’s on the layout.

Course: Wilmington Country Club South Course – 7,534 yards, Par 71

The top 30 in the FedExCup standings after this event move on, so there will be some players trying to make a move at the Wilmington Country Club’s South Course. The track makes its debut on Tour, though it has hosted some notable amateur events in the past. The property was reworked in 2021 adding additional length for a beefy par 71 at 7,534 yards. Most of that comes on the par-5s with two tipping at over 630 yards and a third at over 580. Outside of the distance it isn’t a difficult ride for the pros. Forgiving fairways give players room to work with a few obstacles in front of above average-sized greens. There is no history but I would expect to see some low scores this week.
