BMW Championship Preview, Odds and Predictions

BMW Championship Preview

So far in the FedExCup Playoffs it has been all Bryson DeChambeau, as he has won the first two events. It is down to the final 70 players in the FedExCup standings for this week’s BMW Championship, with the top 30 moving on to the Tour Championship in two weeks. Dustin Johnson is listed as the favorite to win this week’s event, with Justin Thomas the second betting choice. DeChambeau, Johnson and Thomas are almost assured of a top five spot heading to Boston, but the other two spots are up for grabs. Let’s look at the odds and predictions for the BMW Championship.

Odds Analysis

Dustin Johnson +665

D.J. continues to disappoint as the betting favorite and it is hard to take him at odds this low. He is definitely capable of winning any event he enters, but his form simply hasn’t been that great of late and I am looking elsewhere.

Justin Thomas +1225

I was disappointed in Thomas last week and I don’t know that I want to jump right back on with him this week, especially since he doesn’t need to win, as he is almost assured of a top five spot for the Tour Championship.

Justin Rose +1350

My top choice this week is Rose, who finished second last week and should do well on this revamped course. Rose doesn’t win a lot, so we are not getting great value, but I think his form is excellent and I give him a good chance this week.

Brooks Koepka +1350

I just can’t take Koepka at odds this low, as he simply hasn’t delivered in anything other than a major except once. I think he could be a breakout player that eventually starts to win a lot, but I am not yet ready to take him on a weekly basis.

Bryson DeChambeau +1550

DeChambeau continues to surprise me and I have to take him seriously. The problem with backing him this week is that no player has ever won three FedExCup Playoff events in the same season.

Webb Simpson +6000

The first of my three longshots this week is Simpson. He was rolling along last week until the third round when it started to come apart. I expect him to bounce back this week and we get him at big odds.

Brandt Snedeker +7200

I also like Snedeker who won just three weeks ago. He had to withdraw from The Northern Trust due to back spasms but he finished well last week with 66-68 over the weekend. He won the FedExCup in 2012 and I think he has tremendous value this week.

C.T Pan +9500

My really big longshot is Pan. He has played well at Sedgefield in the past which is similar in some respects to Aronimink and he has played well in Boston. He finished runner-up in the Wyndham and is capable of contending this week.

Course: Aronimink Golf Club will be hosting this event for the first time since 2011. The course looks a lot different than it did when Nick Watney won seven years ago. The course has about 100 more bunkers than it did and the fairways are wider. Marc Leishman said that it will be like learning a new golf course. Sean O’Hair is a course member and he said the course plays easier. The course is a par 70 that measures 7,237 yards.
