The next to last tournament in the new FedExCup Fall schedule takes the PGA Tour to another tropical location for the fifth playing of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. A full field of 132 golfers, minus a number of the sports’ biggest names, will navigate the treacherous Port Royal Golf Club. A number of players are looking to position themselves for guaranteed spots in some of the higher profile tournaments in 2024 while others are trying to accumulate as many FedExCup points as they can. The door is open for an unsuspecting winner and opening odds suggest a wide open field with Adam Scott at 14/1 positioned as the betting favorite in the outright market ahead of 11 other players with odds of 25/1 or shorter. A congested field on the betting board brings about some intriguing matchups Be sure to visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of matchup odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know
With most of the bigger names opting out, handicapping the field becomes more of a challenge. What isn’t difficult is the Port Royal Golf Club. Stretched to 6,828 yards at par 71 it isn’t very demanding, though the up and down terrain can make it feel longer. The course didn’t scare Brendon Todd in the 2019 tournament debut when he carded a 24-under. Scores have been more reasonable lately with defending champ Seamus Power winning at 19-under. Mother Nature is a fickle mistress and can wreak havoc with golf balls should she appear, which is almost a given. We won’t see many drivers this week turning this into a second-shot contest where accuracy is the name of the game. Like most coastal layouts wind serves as the primary defense.
Butterfield Bermuda Championship Matchup Picks
Taylor Pendrith -110 vs. Ben Griffin
If anybody’s seeking redemption this week it’s Pendrith. In his only trip to Bermuda a few years ago he was on the verge of a win after scorching Port Royal with a tournament record 61 in the second round. He followed that with a 65 and had the lead heading into the final 18. However, the wheels came off with a Sunday 76 dropping him to fifth, three shots behind winner Lucas Herbert. Maybe Pendrith wasn’t ready last year so he skipped the event, but he’s coming in on a nice run of form following a podium at the Shriners and a T15 last week.
Thomas Detry +108 vs. Adam Scott
Detry was on my radar as a pick in the outright market though I didn’t go with him. I do think he’s a solid player with a game built for the course and the elements. He’s also looking to sneak in the Rookie of the Year race needing something good to happen. Detry nearly made memories last year instead finishing as runner-up to Power. His holed bunker shot on No. 72 was highlight reel material but only made the pain of losing even greater.
Lucas Glover -120 vs. Alex Noren
I may have jumped on the Glover bandwagon a little early. After not playing for two months Glover was back at last week’s WWT Championship and I said that his inactivity could be a liability for a guy that was smoking hot over the summer posting back-to-back wins at one point. Sure enough, Glover sputtered finishing T59, but that hasn’t distracted me from backing him. In fact I expect better things from him with a few competitive rounds under his belt.
Akshay Bhatia -120 vs. Luke List
Bhatia won me a matchup last week when I noted his better finishes have been in tropical locations. Sure enough that’s what happened with Bhatia placing among the top 10 at Tigers’ Cabo San Lucas resort. I might as well dip my toes in that well once again and it’s not much of a reach since his play here last year was stunning. Bhatia placed fourth in the field in greens hit carding four sub-70s to finish T17.
Troy Merritt -110 vs. Lanto Griffin
Taking advantage of the new FedExCup Fall scheduling format, Merritt has climbed the ladder with more work to be done. He opened with a pair of top 10s at the Fortinet and Sanderson Farms Championships while also earning a payday in his last two starts. If you could bet on momentum Merritt is the guy to back with his ascension of 14 spots in the standings since the fall schedule started.
