The penultimate tournament in the FedExCup Fall schedule takes the PGA Tour to another tropical location for the sixth edition of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. A full field of 120 golfers, minus a number of the sports’ biggest names, will navigate the treacherous Port Royal Golf Club. A number of players are looking to position themselves for guaranteed spots in some of the higher profile tournaments in 2025 while others are trying to accumulate as many FedExCup points as they can. The door is open for an unsuspecting winner like we had last year when Camilo Villegas ended a nine-year title drought with a 2-swing victory. Villegas was listed around 126/1. Opening odds suggest another wide open field with Doug Ghim, Seamus Power and Maverick McNealy all hovering around the top of the outright odds board. Need to Know
With most of the Tour’s bigger names sitting this one out, handicapping the field becomes more of a challenge. What isn’t difficult, though, is the Port Royal Golf Club. The only host in the tournaments six-year history measures 6,828 yards at par 71 and isn’t very demanding, though the up and down terrain can make it feel longer. The course didn’t scare Villegas last year when he matched the tournament scoring record of 24-under 260. Brendon Todd established the record in the 2019 tournament debut and, along with Seamus Power, is a former tournament winner. The short distance means we won’t see many drivers turning this into a second-shot contest where accuracy is critical. Mother Nature must be a fan because she shows up wreaking havoc with golf balls. The coastal layout is a target for wind, which serves as the primary defense.
Butterfield Bermuda Championship Matchup Picks
Seamus Power -105 vs. Doug Ghim
Power has been a staple at this tournament making his fifth start and first since winning in 2022. He didn’t get the chance to repeat due to injury so in a way this is his opportunity. His title here came 12 months after taming Port Royal with a pair of 67s when he expertly sliced through a steady breeze. And Power is having a strong close to the season with four finishes among the top 13 in his last five Tour starts.
Matti Schmid -105 vs. Daniel Berger
A nice run was interrupted by a MC at El Cardonal last week, but that only gave Schmid additional time to prep for a return to Port Royal with hopes of building off his solo third a year ago. Schmid had a solo fifth and T3 in two starts before the World Wide Technology Championship and the run was preceded by a T16 at the Sanderson Farms. He’s back in Bermuda for a third straight year after scoring 67 or lower in all four rounds last October as one of three players to finish at 21-under or better.
Carson Young -125 vs. Alex Smalley
One player who doesn’t have to worry about his status for next year is Young, who solidified his spot among the top 125 with a career best T2 in Mexico last week. He expertly navigated the coastal El Cardonal layout and will hopefully continue with his ball-striking for a similar result. Not having to worry about collecting points takes a load off and I’m betting Young does his thing.
Justin Lower +110 vs. Ben Griffin
Much like Young, Lower also maneuvered around El Cardonal finishing with the same score for a share of second. One difference between the two is that Lower has enjoyed success in this tournament. He’s 3 for 3 in his career at Port Royal placing among the top 20 each time. Last week’s result is a boost for someone who has mastered the layout.
Kevin Yu -115 vs. Mark Hubbard
Converging trends collide for Yu this week making him a pick in this matchup. A consistent tee-to-green performer, Yu grabbed a spot on the podium in his first visit to Port Royal in 2022. He also enters a few weeks removed from his first PGA title after winning the Sanderson Farms Championship in a playoff. Most recently he was T16 at the ZOZO showing solid skills.
