With the PGA Tour shutting down for the Holiday break in a few weeks players have two opportunities remaining to collect valuable FedExCup points starting this week at the Cadence Bank Houston Open. The Tour returns to U.S. soil after two weeks abroad with Scottie Scheffler headlining the field as a big favorite in the outright market. Scheffler led at the final turn in last year’s edition before being overtaken by Jason Kokrak for the title. A closing 62 at Mayakoba got him on the podium now he looks to right a wrong. There is a drop in odds after Scheffler leaving the rest of the field in catch up mode and setting up some intriguing matchups. Need to Know
Houston is one of the PGA Tour’s longest-running host cities with this tournament returning to Memorial Park in 2020 for the first time in nearly 60 years. Ahead of its return, the municipal course underwent a facelift with input from Brooks Koepka with bunkers, trees and water removed. The idea was to make the course playable for the public while still presenting enough of a challenge for the pros. At 7,412 yards the course is lengthy causing some problems. Carlos Ortiz won at 13-under in 2020 with Kokrak’s 10-under the lowest winning score in two decades at this event. With tricky slopes and bumpy greens Memorial Park has been one of the toughest par 70s on Tour the last two years.
Cadence Bank Houston Open Matchup Picks
Mackenzie Hughes -120 vs. Aaron Rai
A strong run of form heading into this tournament and a history at Memorial Park has me backing Hughes despite the price. I try to find more value in my matchup picks but sometimes it’s just hard to ignore what looks like a sure thing. There are no sure things when it comes to gambling, but you know what I mean. Hughes is one of seven winners this season with two additional top-25s in three starts. Two years ago he carded a 63 here paving the way to a T7 making him a tough option to pass up.
Harris English +105 vs. Dean Burmester
English is happy to be playing golf without discomfort after undergoing hip surgery earlier this year. The pain was unbearable forcing him to take several months off. He’s steadily gotten stronger since returning and he’s making up for lost time by starting this season going 4 for 5 with a top-10 at Silverado. Even dealing with pain English won a couple of tournaments two seasons ago and getting back into the swing of things so to speak he should only get better.
Davis Riley -105 vs. Joel Dahmen
I’m not betting on Riley to win his first PGA Tour event rather to have him finish with a better score than his matchup opponent. He had a solid run last season with 10 top-25s in 29 starts qualifying for the FedExCup playoffs and his solid play has continued. He’s not a big hitter but his tee-to-green game is what separates him from the pack. He was dialed in last start claiming a T21 at Mayakoba and showed flashes here last year with a T29.
Taylor Montgomery -115 vs. Maverick McNealy
You almost expect things to cool off for Montgomery after a scintillating start to his first season. He opened the campaign with a podium finish in Napa and has gone T15 or better in all five starts. He’s making the game look easy and while he’s on a roll it makes sense to continue backing him.
Russell Henley -105 vs. Tony Finau
I don’t often go against Finau but recent form and history at Memorial Park have me backing Henley. Henley’s win at Mayakoba was his first since claiming the 2017 Houston Open title, though that was at a different venue. Still, Henley has performed well at Memorial Park going 2 for 2 with a T7 last year. Finau missed the cut last week in his first start of the season and has finished outside the top-20 in all six starts in Houston. I just hope this pick doesn’t backfire on me.
