The Charles Schwab Challenge will always be a special event on the PGA Tour. It was the first tournament played last year following a three-month hiatus inspired by COVID with many of the sports best assembling at Colonial Country Club. The field this week isn’t as strong, but it’s still a good one considering it follows the second major of the year. And PGA Championship winner Phil Mickelson is back at Colonial where he’s a two-time winner, though he’s in the middle of the pack on the odds board. It’s safe to say Jordan Spieth is back. He ended a lengthy title drought with a win in Texas earlier this season and is the betting favorite. Need to Know
Colonial Country Club has hosted this event since 1946 while remaining relatively unchanged, so there won’t be many surprises. The course plays at 7,209 yards and has always been a par-70, making it average in terms of length when compared to other layouts on Tour. It’s a stock course that will play much easier than Kiawah Island for those who competed last week. Going long off the tee is always a plus, but length isn’t a major factor on the layout. Hitting the smaller greens is a bigger concern, and of course making putts is always a difference-maker. The par-4 fifth has been the most difficult hole in every playing since 2005 and is part of what’s called the “Horrible Horseshoe.” Scoring has been low over the years but we could see a difference with conditions changing this time around.

Will Zalatoris -110 vs. Scottie Scheffler
It’s hard to ignore Zalatoris and what he’s accomplished in his short time on Tour. He makes the trip following another fine performance at the PGA Championship where he finished T8. Since this isn’t a major he might have a letdown since he’s placed among the top-10 in all three of his major championship starts. That hasn’t affected him in other tournaments so I’m not going to worry about that. I’ll just bet he’ll continue to play phenomenal golf and prevail in this matchup
Jordan Spieth -120 vs. Justin Thomas
The native Texan has been dominate in his home state with three top-10s in three starts, including a win at the Texas Open. Spieth has also enjoyed plenty of success at Colonial with a perfect record that includes a win in 2016 and two runner-up finishes among his seven top-15s. He has overcome the issues that plagued his game for a few years and I’m riding the wave as long as I can.
Daniel Berger -105 vs. Collin Morikawa
This is an interesting matchup between the top two players at last year’s edition. Berger won that one in a playoff so Morikawa likely has a bone to pick. Berger is also looking to get his game dialed in after struggling last week. He made the cut bouncing back from an opening 79, but never was in contention. That was different for him since he placed among the top-20 in four of his previous five starts, including a T3 at the Byron Nelson.
Matt Wallace +100 vs. Cameron Tringale
Wallace has been consistently good over the last few months and buying him at even money was a no-brainer. He’s played the weekend in each of his last six starts, a run that started with a T3 at the Texas Open. He also claimed a T6 at the Wells Fargo and placed in the top 35 in five of those six events. Making the weekend is a start and beating his matchup partner is the end.
Patrick Reed -110 vs. Tony Finau
I don’t go against Finau in a matchup that often, in fact I haven’t done it this season. But backing Reed looks like the smart play in this one. His results have improved every year at Colonial with a T7 last year, and he’s been contending in just about every tournament for some time. He did a nice job navigating Kiawah Island finishing T17 last week and should have an easier time on a course he knows all too well.
