It will be hard to outdo the excitement of last week’s PGA Championship when Justin Thomas rallied for a playoff victory over Will Zalatoris. The two are included in the field for this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge as the PGA Tour concludes its run through the Lone Star state. Five of the world’s top-10 players are scheduled to peg it up at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth with No. 1 Scottie Scheffler topping the PGA odds board. Despite missing the cut last week for the first time since October, Scheffler opened with shorter odds than both Thomas and Zalatoris with fan favorite Jordan Spieth also near the top of the odds list. Jason Kokrak looks to defend the title he won by two shots last year sending Spieth to his third career runner-up finish in this event. Odds Analysis
Bryson DeChambeau +6600
Last we saw DeChambeau he was backing out of the PGA Championship due to an injury that hadn’t healed enough to make him effective on the course. He must be close because he’s giving it another go this weekend and I don’t think we’ll catch him at this price very often. The injury has taken its toll with MCs in three events including most recently the Masters. The odds certainly are not in his favor, but don’t forget that when healthy DeChambeau is one of the best at his job with eight PGA wins to his credit. And this is a course that can yield low scores to bombers with accuracy. I think he’s worth the risk since the odds won’t get much longer.
Tony Finau +3500
Colonial typically isn’t a course for big hitters given its average length, but the few players who gain strokes off the tee can have an edge. Finau is one of those players with an ability to drive the course that’s paid off with him going 6 for 6 here including a runner-up showing in 2019. He was hanging around the top of the leaderboard last year until a closing 72 cost him. That was his first round in the 70s at Colonial in his last 10, so there is a level of comfort here. And Finau’s looking for that breakout this season.
Max Homa +2800
Scheffler is the only player on Tour with more wins than Homa this season and Max is coming off an impressive T13 at the PGA last week, his best career finish in a major. That came one start after winning the Wells Fargo, his second victory along with a season-opening triumph at the Fortinet. He’s among the best ball-strikers in the field, which should help him go low on this course, and he’s made nine consecutive cuts, so things are looking good. I just hope I didn’t jinx him with all the hype.
Collin Morikawa +1600
A lot of the so-called experts say course knowledge plays a big role at Colonial. If that’s the case backing Morikawa is an easy choice. He made the cut last week but was never in contention, but it’s been a strong season nonetheless with six top-10s in 11 events, including a top-5 at last month’s Masters. He lost in a playoff here in 2020 and placed 14th last year while boasting a scoring average of 67.5 across eight rounds. A few players at the top of the odds board stood out with Morikawa being one of them. Another is ....
Jordan Spieth +1200
Who always plays well in his home state and has racked up a number of big finishes at Colonial. Issues with the putter cost him last week, though he still played 72 holes and finished inside the top-35. It’s been a pleasant run for him since his MC at the Masters winning the RBC Heritage and finishing second at the Byron Nelson. And like I said he’s enjoyed all kinds of success here with three runner-up finishes along with a win in 2016. It’s safe to say Spieth likes Colonial, and I like his chances.
Course: Colonial Country Club – 7,209 yards, Par 70
Colonial is the longest running host layout of any non-major event, so there is plenty of history. At just over 7,200 yards, the course has always played at par 70 and is average in terms of length compared to other Tour tracks. It’s never been a course for big hitters with precision and accuracy playing a bigger role while rewarding consistent ball-striking. Every course has a signature hole or holes, and Colonial is no different. Known as the Horrible Horseshoe, holes 3, 4 and 5 can impact scores. The par-4 fifth is the most difficult with No. 3 and No. 4 close behind.
