It’s been a nomadic existence for the young tournament with this week’s CJ CUP in South Carolina having a fourth different host in as many years. Most of the issues were brought about thanks to COVID restrictions with the Congaree Golf Club near Hilton Head offering up hosting services this time around. The event debuted in 2017 in South Korea then moved to Las Vegas for the last two editions. The limited field of 78 features six of the top-10 players in the world with No. 1 Scottie Scheffler leading the way. However, No. 2 Rory McIlroy is the betting favorite in the outright market as well as the defending champ claiming a one-shot victory over Collin Morikawa at the Summit Club last year. McIlroy is also a big favorite in his matchups with a loaded field offering numerous betting options in head-to-head battles. You can find current matchup odds at BookMaker.eu when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know
There is a history, albeit a brief one, with Congaree Golf Club and the PGA Tour. The layout hosted the one-off Palmetto Championship in June 2021 as part of that season’s reimagined schedule. Of the 156 golfers who pegged it up that week 19 are back, including runner-up Tyrell Hatton. There is plenty of length with Congaree stretching to 7,655 yards at par 71. It’s what DP World Tour players call a heathland course and it’s designed to play fast negating some of the distance big hitters might have. There is plenty of sand and coarse soil on the outskirts making accuracy down the fairway a key element for success. The par-5 fourth measures 645 yards while two other par-5s are over 580 yards. Going long and straight keeps you in the game.
The CJ CUP in South Carolina Matchup Picks
Max Homa +123 vs. Matthew Fitzpatrick
There’s a lot to like about Fitzpatrick’s game but I’m high on Homa as he continues a run of solid form. He closed last season with a nice second-round 62 to finish T5 at the TOUR Championship and the carryover hasn’t slowed. He opened this season successfully defending his title at the Fortinet Championship and went 4-0-0 at the Presidents Cup. A few weeks back he earned a top-20 at the Shriners and at his price he’s hard to pass up.
Jon Rahm -108 vs. Rory McIlroy
I’m leaning toward Rahm in a battle of heavyweights who dominated in recent weeks on the DP World Tour. McIlroy is in one of his familiar grooves with three top-5s overseas since winning the FedExCup title and you have to think that run will end soon. Rahm went 1-2 in his last two starts on the DP Tour, and when he gets on a roll like he’s on it tends to last awhile. You almost never get Rahm at this price in a matchup and I’m taking advantage of it.
Jordan Spieth -138 vs. Shane Lowry
Lights out at the Presidents Cup with a 5-0-0 record, Spieth tees it up for the first time since then looking to take those positive vibes from Quail Hollow with him. I typically don’t back someone at Spieth’s price, but I’ll admit he’s one of my favorites and he played well last season with six top-10s in his 22 starts. There are always certain players whose game seems like a good fit for the course they’re playing and Spieth looks like a natural for Congaree.
Rickie Fowler -110 vs. Sahith Theegala
I went back and forth on this one before settling on Fowler simply because he’s playing well after a lengthy struggle. He changed instructors and the move seems to have paid off with a run of form we haven’t seen from him in some time. A T6 at Silverado was his best finish in nearly a year and we could have seen depression set in after his MC at the Shriners. But Fowler showed this season is going to be different with a T2 at the ZOZO after holding the 54-hole lead.
Viktor Hovland +103 vs. Sungjae Im
Much like Spieth, Hovland has a game that looks like a good fit at Congaree. That doesn’t mean a thing, though, since the players still have to perform. With middle rounds of 66-64 at the ZOZO Hovland finished T5 in what was a nice tuneup. He has good length off the tee and his approach game is among the best on Tour, and necessary for success at Congaree. At plus odds I’ll back Hovland for a decent payout.
