Another year another different venue with this week’s CJ CUP in South Carolina contested at Congaree Golf Club near Richland. The first three editions of the tournament took place in South Korea with last two teeing off in Las Vegas. A strong field features six of the top-10 ranked players headlined by No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and No. 2 Rory McIlroy. The rankings come with an asterisk, though, since LIV golfers aren’t included. McIlroy kickstarted his FedExCup winning last season with a one-shot victory over Collin Morikawa in this event in Las Vegas. He’s also the favorite in the early PGA Tour betting odds ahead of Jon Rahm as the only two players with shorter than 10/1 odds. Third favorite Justin Thomas won two of the first three events contested in South Korea. Like last week the field is limited to 78 players with all guaranteed four rounds. Odds Analysis
Tyrrell Hatton +3500
While some Tour members have been lying low this fall Hatton had a few nice warm-ups on the DP World Tour before heading back to the PGA side. He was solo eighth at the Italian Open followed by a T7 in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He stumbled a bit last week with a T45 at the ZOZO but his experience on this layout a few years ago was mostly positive. Hatton finished as co-runner-up one-shot off the lead at the Palmetto Championship. A run of good form with positive results on the host layout and a nice price have me backing the Englishman.
Jon Rahm +900
We haven’t seen Rahm on the PGA Tour yet this season, but like Hatton he’s fine-tuned his game on the DP World Tour with a runner-up at the BMW PGA Championship followed by a win at the Open de Espana. And you figure he has to be itching to get back on Tour after a slow close to last season, at least by his standards. When Rahm gets in a groove it can last for several weeks and his recent play on the DP Tour shows he’s in fine form.
Rickie Fowler +6600
Is it too early to get back on the Fowler band wagon? It’s been a struggle for a few years now, but an instructor change has yielded positive results. He was the 54-hole leader last week before closing with a 70 to finish one-shot off the lead. He also placed T6 at the season-opening Fortinet Championship, proof that he’s back in the game. However, the consistency is still missing like his MC at the Shriners showed, but Fowler has a nice price for a player on a good run of form.
Scottie Scheffler +1400
I was a bit hesitant to back Scheffler since he hasn’t played competitively since the Presidents Cup and instead took a deep dive into McIlroy. I’ve always for the most part stayed away from backing the favorite instead looking for value further down the odds board. While it might be a mistake to avoid McIlroy, Scheffler just stands out with ability to play anytime and anywhere. And since there is no cut he can chisel off the rust if any has accumulated.
Jordan Spieth +2500
If momentum from the Presidents Cup can carry over after five weeks Spieth is a lock for the outright title. Becoming one of just a handful of players to ever go 5-0-0 in the event, Spieth was arguably the U.S. team’s best player. Even if there’s no carry after several weeks you have to believe there are plenty of positives to take from that week. Besides Spieth’s most recent victory came at the RBC Heritage, which also took place in South Carolina back in April.
Course: Congaree Golf Club – 7,655 yards, Par 71
Not a complete stranger to the PGA Tour, Congaree will host an event for the second time following the 2021 Palmetto Championship. Situated in South Carolina’s lowcountry, Congaree is a beefy layout measured at 7,655 yards at par 71. Firm and fast fairways tend to mitigate the length and generous fairways will assist the shortest of hitters. Keeping the ball straight off the tee is a necessity with waste areas all over the layout ready to gobble up wayward shots. Big hitters should have an edge, though, with par 4s that measure over 490 yards. The par 5s are monsters with all three stretched to over 580 yards with the fourth hole tapped out at nearly 650 yards.
