Corales Puntacana Championship Golf Matchups

With 64 of the top ranked players in the world competing in the WGC Match Play event, the PGA Tour offers up the second alternate field tournament of the season, this one in the Dominican Republic at the Corales Puntacana Championship. The field is littered with lesser known players and recent Korn Ferry Tour grads, though it doesn’t mean they can’t play. Four previous winners in the brief history of the event are back to try and become the first two-time winner. Chad Ramey prevailed last year and is joined by Joel Dahmen (2021), Brice Garnett (2018) and Dominic Bozzelli (2016). Past major winners Jason Dufner, Jimmy Walker and Geoff Oglivy are also scheduled to peg it up. Wyndham Clark emerged as the outright betting favorite, but odds suggest a wide open field that offers a great chance to make some coin on tournament matchups. Need to Know

The Corales Course at Puntacana Resort stretches out to 7,670 yards at par 72 and is one of the longest tracks players will see. Despite that it’s open off the tee often playing to big hitters. And the layout has proven to be an easy mark for pros with six of the previous seven winners scoring 17-under or better. The exception was Joel Dahmen in 2021 battling extreme conditions to win at 12-under ending a streak of three straight -18 winners. The tournament is also a battle to the end with the last four winners and five overall finishing just a single shot clear of the field. Low scores are out there if the wind doesn’t blow too hard, but that’s not a guarantee. Nestled on the eastern edge of the island coastal elements always come into play. Showing how unpredictable things are and giving hope to the field, Graeme McDowell won in 2019 after carding an opening 73.

Corales Puntacana Championship – Matchup Picks

Thomas Detry -110 vs. Taylor Pendrith

A Tour rookie, Detry is enjoying a fine season and is a staple at Corales making his fifth start. He’s 4 for 4 with the last two visits resulting in a top 15. Overall Detry made 14 consecutive cuts before an MC last week giving him a breather before tending to the task at hand. He has some bright spots this season with a runner-up at the Bermuda Championship and three other top 20s. He opened as the second favorite along with Pendrith, but Detry is trending upward with a singular objective to win this week.

Ben Martin +108 vs. Emiliano Grillo

Matched up with the veteran Grillo may have cost Martin, but that only makes backing him better. Likely a favorite in Puerto Rico earlier this season, Martin had to WD in the middle of a strong stretch that saw him collect a T13 at Pebble Beach and a T5 at the Honda Classic. He also earned payouts in his last two starts and has a rich history here with a runner-up last year after a T9 in 2021. I backed Martin in the outright and feel good about his chances.

Kramer Hickok -105 vs. Tyler Duncan

Getting over his early season struggles, Hickok enters on a nice run after missing the cut in a number of starts. The ego boost of earning a payout coupled with past success at Corales makes it easy to back him at a reasonable price. Hickok is 3 for 3 on this track finishing T21 or better each time. And having positive if not spectacular results over the last two months is a good sign.

Chad Ramey +106 vs. Fabrizio Zanotti

There’s a lot going against Ramey in this matchup but I decided to back him anyway. There’s never been a repeat or two-time winner at Corales, though the sample size is small since only seven tournaments were held previously. And he’s yet to crack the top 20 since his breakthrough win last year. But returning to the scene of his only Tour win should serve as inspiration. I’m not backing him to win the outright just this matchup and I expect Ramey will be at the top of his game making the plus odds price attractive.

Henrik Norlander -110 vs. Vincent Norrman

I’ve backed Norlander a number of times in matchups and he’s come through for me more times than not. He’s yet to win a PGA Tour title but the Swede is always hovering around the top of the leaderboard in similar events. Earlier this month he closed with a pair of 68s for a T15 in Puerto Rico. He missed the cut in his lone appearance here but he did shoot 69 in the second round. And with some of his best showings in like-fielded tournaments this is a good opportunity for Norlander to get back in the swing of things.
