If you’re thinking the PGA Tour was just in the Dominican Republic for the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship you’re right. Back in September the tournament played as a stand-alone event but it has returned to its usual spot in the rotation alongside the WGC Match Play for the second playing of the season. With top players in the world in Texas this week, the field is wide open for an unheralded winner to emerge, and there are plenty of possibilities. Hudson Swafford won here back in September and is positioned well down the odds board. Thomas Pieters, Charley Hoffman and Emiliano Grillo opened as tri-favorites with odds suggesting a wide open field. Odds Analysis
Brice Garnett +4000
Garnett has missed the cut in four of his last six events. The two he made, though, have come in his last three starts, so maybe the game is coming around. He ended a three-cut stretch with a top-5 at the Puerto Rico Open and was in the hunt at the Honda Classic until a closing 73 dropped him down the leaderboard. This is the kind of field that allows Garnett to thrive and he picked up a win here just a few years ago going 18-under to top the field by four swings.
Will Gordon +3500
Another player who can take advantage of the watered down field is Gordon, who still has that MC from his September debut in this tournament on his mind. He’s been solid going 6 of 7 since January but has been undone by a few poor rounds each time. He has the metrics gaining strokes off the tee and putting to suggest a stronger showing and he can compete with a T3 at a strong Travelers Championship his best finish of the season to date.
Charley Hoffman +1800
I’m staying away from the favorites for the most part since this is the type of field that will spring an unsuspecting winner on us. But if you’re looking for someone near the top of the list to back Hoffman is the right pick. He’s overcome a tough start to the year with three top-17 showings in his last four starts. The run started with a T7 at Pebble Beach and continued with a T17 at THE PLAYERS. Hoffman secured a T14 here in September and he’s among the best in the field on approach, which will bode well for his chances.
Nate Lashley +3400
I was a little surprised to see Lashley offered at this price. He won here on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2017 shooting 20-under and finished among the top-5 in September when he went 15-under. He definitely likes the layout and he’s played the weekend in each of his last five starts with a T5 at Pebble Beach and a T17 in Phoenix. He’s another player who can use the lack of star power in the field to his advantage.
Tyler McCumber +5000
An under the radar pick I had to go with McCumber in this section given his recent showing in the DR. It’s not like his solo second just a months ago is any indication of better things this time around, but his comfort level on this track stood out in September. McCumber hasn’t played poorly, just not good enough to get him much support on the odds board. He was T22 at THE PLAYERS and T33 at the Honda Classic in his last two starts and should feel good about his chances heading in.
Course: Puntacana Resort and Club – 7,670 yards, Par 72
The Corales Course at Puntacana is long measuring at 7,670 yards, but it is forgiving with wide fairways, rough that is more like a nuisance and slow greens. The field has hit more than 70 percent of fairways in the last three Tour events here making this a second shot and short game sprint all but eliminating distance off the tee. Going low is required with all three previous winners scoring 18-under. In two years as a stop on the Korn Ferry Tour we saw -20 and -24. Nestled along the coast it’s a spectacular layout with breathtaking views. Located in a spot where winds can and likely will play a role, golfers have to plan for that part of the experience.
