With the final round falling on the same day as the NFL’s conference championship games, the PGA Tour has again moved the start of the Farmers Insurance Open up a day to avoid any conflicts. The full-field of golfers led by betting favorite Xander Schauffele will navigate two courses at Torrey Pines, located in the seaside San Diego suburb of La Jolla. The start of the new season hasn’t been favorable to Tour stars with improbable winners at the first three events. Nick Dunlap captured The American Express last week becoming the first amateur in three decades to win a Tour title. Max Homa is back to defend the title he won by two swings last year with two-time FIO winners Jason Day and Brandt Snedeker also in the field. The loaded field will navigate the North and South Course at Torrey Pines over the first two days with cut survivors playing the weekend on the South Course. Need to Know
To accommodate the full field we’ll see both courses at Torrey Pines in use. Every player will get 18 holes on the North and South Course over the first two days. Those surviving the cut will play the weekend on the more difficult south side, which has an updated length of 7,765 yards, making it the longest in history to host a Tour event. The North Course plays around 500 yards shorter and had a scoring average below 70 last year. Only once in the past 11 years has the winning score been better than 15-under with Justin Rose at -21 in the 2019 edition. The South layout expanded to nearly 7,700 yards in 2001 and additional yardage was added ahead of the 2020 edition. Big hitters typically do well here with the length, but high rough is an obstacle.
Farmers Insurance Open Matchup Picks
Max Homa -101 vs. Patrick Cantlay
His win here last year was his most recent on the PGA Tour, that doesn’t mean Homa is in a slump. Just a few months ago he won the DP World Tour’s Nedbank Challenge and moved into the Tour’s top tier status with a pair of titles and 13 top 10s in 24 tournaments last season. He began this season with a nice T14 at Kapalua and returns to a venue that’s yielded him some great results.
Ludvig Aberg +108 vs. Sungjae Im
Catching Aberg with plus odds in a matchup is a gift and one that I’m jumping on. Sure he’s going against an established player, but I like my chances. Aberg tore up the Tour in the fall after helping Europe secure the Ryder Cup. He won the RSM Classic, one of five finishes among the top 13 in his five starts after the Ryder Cup. And Torrey Pines looks to be a good fit for his game that relies on accuracy and approach.
Jason Day +110 vs. Min Woo Lee
A two-time FIO winner, Day has mastered the Torrey Pines property over the last few years. His second win in 2018 was part of a six-start stretch that saw Day collect four top 10s with an additional T16 in that span. He’s been good to start the season as well with a T10 at The Sentry and a T34 last week, though he carded three rounds of 68 with a 66. That consistency will help this week and at his price there is value backing Day.
Sahith Theegala -105 vs. Keegan Bradley
I’m going to say Theegala’s MC at Waialae was the exception and not the norm. The former Pepperdine product has been so good since the start of his career that a slip up was inevitable. So, I’m backing him this week to rebound and be more like the player that earned a share of fourth at this event last year. Theegala had a strong fall winning the Fortinet Championship for one of two top 20s in three starts.
Luke List -105 vs. Patrick Rodgers
A former champ who has been consistently good in this tournament, List has favorable odds in this matchup. List finished below the cut line in each of his last six starts capturing the title in a playoff over Will Zalatoris in 2022. List was T25 last year in his title defense earning a fourth top 25 in his last six FIO starts. A win at the Sanderson Farms in October was one six top 25s in his last nine starts with good form entering this tournament.
