Some say the PGA Tour season doesn’t get started until the Farmers Insurance Open. If that’s the case we can say it’s on with an elite full field featuring six of the world’s top-10 golfers teeing it up at iconic Torrey Pines. To avoid a conflict with the NFL playoffs on Sunday, the tournament has been moved up a day with final round action concluding on Saturday. We still have plenty of wagering opportunities on tournament matchups but less time to handicap them. OWGR No. 1 Jon Rahm is the betting favorite in the outright market and he’s owned Torrey Pines winning the FIO in 2017 and last year’s U.S. Open. Patrick Reed is back to defend his title from last year and the Tour’s only two-time winner this season Hideki Matsuyama are featured in head to head battles. The stacked field will attack the North and South Course at Torrey Pines over the first two days with cut survivors playing the weekend on the monstrous South Course. Need to Know
To accommodate the full field we’ll see a multiple course format again this week. Every player will get 18 holes on the North and South Course over the first two days. Those surviving the cut will play the weekend on the more difficult south side, which has an updated length of 7,765 yards, making it the longest in history to host a Tour event. The North Course plays around 500 yards shorter and had a scoring average below 70 last year, so guys better get their scoring on this side. Only once in the past nine years has the winning score been better than 15-under. The South layout expanded to nearly 7,700 yards in 2001 and additional yardage was added ahead of the 2020 edition. Big hitters typically do well here with the length, but high rough is an obstacle.
Farmers Insurance Open Matchup Picks
Xander Schauffele +113 vs. Justin Thomas
This is a home game for Schauffele and at plus-odds he’s hard to pass on. Course knowledge didn’t help him at TP early in his career with four MCs in five starts, but he said he never felt 100 percent in those visits. I guess he felt better last year when he was co-runner up in the FIO and had a seventh-place showing in the U.S. Open. The X-man is a good outright bet as well, but I’ll take him at this price to win the matchup.
Max Homa -120 vs. Si Woo Kim
Homa has a fondness for playing in California with two of his three Tour victories coming in his native Golden State, including a season-opening triumph in Napa. I typically don’t back players with odds longer than his in this matchup, but Homa feels at home and has consecutive top-20s in this tournament with a top-10 two years ago.
Matthew Wolff +115 vs. Maverick McNealy
Wolff started the season on fire so I guess a slip up was due. That happened last week when he missed the cut at The American Express. The format of that tournament isn’t for everyone so I’ll give Wolff a pass and back him for a rebound this week. And at his price he’s an inviting option. Overcoming issues that plagued his game last season, Wolff has been dialed in finishing among the top-20 in each of his first four starts with a runner-up in the Shriners and a top-5 at Mayakoba.
Tony Finau +100 vs. Scottie Scheffler
His last visit to Torrey Pines was one Finau would like to forget. Pegging it up at the U.S. Open last year he missed the cut, which was a rarity for him. Earlier in the year Finau was co-runner-up in the FIO, his seventh top-25 in seven starts. He has three other top-10 finishes in that stretch so I think it’s safe to say his MC was the exception and not the norm. I expect Finau to get back in the hunt this week, in fact I’m betting on it.
Daniel Berger -105 vs. Bryson DeChambeau
Torrey Pines is a course that should seemingly play well to DeChambeau’s monstrous drives. And while he can make the course play small he hasn’t had much success here. He has two MCs in as many FIO starts and finished outside the top-25 at last year’s U.S. Open. And he’s finished T-25 or worse in seven of his last 12 starts going back to last season. I guess this pick isn’t so much about Berger as it about DeChambeau. However, Berger has been a bit more consistent and his overall game is a better fit for the course.
