The top 70 players in the season-long FedExCup race advance to the three-tournament PGA Tour playoff, which opens this week with the second playing of the aptly named FedEx St. Jude Championship. There was more emphasis put on events during the season with the number of playoff participants sliced by 55. As a result the smaller field allows every golfer to compete in all four rounds. I mistakenly noted that there was a cut in a previous article, but alas there isn’t. With the top 50 point-getters after this weekend advancing in the tournament, there’s pressure on a number of players to earn points. However, that’s not an issue with the top three players in the world, who are also atop the outright odds board. OWGR No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, No. 3 Jon Rahm and No. 2 Rory McIlroy all have shorter than 10/1 odds and are featured in matchups. Need to Know
Host of a PGA Tour event since 1989, TPC Southwind hosts the playoff opener for the second straight year. At over 7,200 yards and par 70, it hosted the limited field WGC from 2019 to 2021 with none of the three winners present this week. And last year’s champ Will Zalatoris is also not in attendance due to a recent injury. With the playoff field down to 70 players there is no cut line and golfers outside the top 50 can have a chance to make a move with points quadrupled for the first two playoff tournaments. The course underwent changes ahead of the WGC, though it still yielded a sub-70 scoring average. It does present some problems, though. The old dairy farm takes players through a natural stretch of lakes, ponds and creeks. Long and straight off the tee is helpful, but this is more of a second-shot course and hitting greens in regulation is huge.
FedEx St. Jude Championship Matchup Picks
Tommy Fleetwood +110 vs. Tyrrell Hatton
I’m always looking for value in my matchup picks and I think I found some good ones this week. All eyes will be on the top three favorites, and deservedly so, but Fleetwood has been sneaky good for months and that first PGA Tour win is coming. It may not happen this week, but his steady play has me backing him at plus odds in this matchup. Four of Fleetwood’s last five starts have resulted in a top 10 with his MC coming despite a pair of 69s at the Travelers.
Max Homa +110 vs. Collin Morikawa
Guess who rests in fourth in the FedExCup standings? If the matchup pick didn’t give it away I’ll tell you, it’s Homa. His hot start to the season lifted him among the leaders and he appeared to find his game recently following a pair of MCs. Homa went T21-T12-T10 in his last three starts looking a lot like the player who racked up a pair of wins among his eight top 20s over his first 10 starts.
Tom Kim +100 vs. Hideki Matsuyama
Kim seems to play his best when it matters most and like Homa he’s on a nice run of form entering the playoffs. He surged at The Open climbing into a tie for second after an opening 74, which came after a T6 in the Scottish Open. The current run started with a T8 at the Masters after opening that major with a 73. The hype has died down but that hasn’t stopped Kim from performing at a high level.
J.T. Poston -110 vs. Byeong Hun An
Another solid player over the last few months is Poston, who hasn’t finished worse than T7 in his last four non-major starts. The streak started with a T6 at the John Deere snapping a funk that saw him post five MCs in seven previous outings. Three rounds of 66 earned him a runner-up at the 3M Open and his tune up for this week was a T7 at the Wyndham scoring 68 or better in all four rounds. He also has a pair of top 20s on this track.
Xander Schauffele +100 vs. Patrick Cantlay
Placing 16th in the FedExCup standings without earning a victory shows you how consistent Schauffele has been. And he hasn’t been as good as he was in previous years, so he’s a good bet to continue that stroll in this matchup. I faded X-man in the outright, but nine top 10s in 19 starts is a good season and even money is the kicker.
