The top 70 golfers in the FedExCup standings continue their season in the three-tournament PGA Tour playoff, which begins this week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. With a dominant season that included six titles and most recently a gold medal at the Olympics, Scottie Scheffler is a big favorite in the outright market. Scheffler has a nearly 2,000 point lead in the standings over Xander Schauffele, who also happens to be the second favorite. Scheffler has struggled in this tournament, though, finishing T31 last year after a MC in 2022. Lucas Glover was well down the odds board when he upset the field in a playoff last year. He failed to qualify this season leaving a new titlist to hoist the hardware on Sunday. Scheffler, Schauffele and Rory McIlroy all have outright odds of shorter than 10/1 and are featured in several matchups. Need to Know
Host of a PGA Tour event since 1989, TPC Southwind hosts the playoff opener for the third straight year. At over 7,200 yards and par 70, it hosted the limited field WGC from 2019 to 2021 with 2020 champ Justin Thomas pegging it up. Last year’s champ Lucas Glover finished 78th in the standings and failed to make the playoff cut. With the playoff field down to 70 players there is no cut line and golfers outside the top 50 have a chance to make a move with points quadrupled for the first two playoff tournaments. The course underwent changes ahead of the WGC, though it still yielded a sub-70 scoring average. It does present some problems, though. The old dairy farm takes players through a natural stretch of lakes, ponds and creeks. Long and straight off the tee is helpful, but this is more of a second-shot course and hitting greens in regulation is huge.
FedEx St. Jude Championship Matchup Picks
Tony Finau +106 vs. Patrick Cantlay
I really liked how Finau picked up his game over the last several months running off six top 20s in his last seven starts. One thing that helped was improved putting, and that’s always a factor on a course with large greens. And you can’t discount his work off the tee. A big hitter, Finau can shrink the course giving him scoring opportunities. He also has a history at Southwind claiming a top 5 two years ago. Cantlay is a former FedExCup champ, but I like Finau’s game and his price.
Collin Morikawa +106 vs. Rory McIlroy
Morikawa checks a lot of boxes making him a worthy pick against the No. 3 seed. First, he’s on a sparkling run of form that includes a top 25 in each of his last 11 starts. And he’s performed well on the biggest stage with stellar fields collecting a T16 or better in all four majors. Oh, and he’s placed among the top 5 five times since his T3 at the Masters. In two starts in this tournament he’s T13-T5, so course knowledge is valuable, and at plus odds his price is right.
Ludvig Aberg +100 vs. Tommy Fleetwood
It probably isn’t the best move to bet against Fleetwood, but it’s hard to ignore what Aberg has done and catching him at even-money is a bonus. Aberg makes his debut in this tournament and on the TPC Southwind course, but don’t think that’s going to scare him because he’s smashed a number of firsts this season. He bounced back from a rare MC with a decent showing in the Olympics to go along with his seven top 10s.
Sahith Theegala -105 vs. Davis Thompson
I’ve backed Theegala numerous times in matchups this season and the former Pepperdine Wave hasn’t disappointed. He’s made the cut in 17 of 21 starts collecting 10 top 20s with seven of those doubling as top 10s. Making the decision easier is his rebound from a minor slump that saw him finish T6 or better in two of his last three starts. He’s also mastered the Southwind layout with a pair of T13s in two starts.
Wyndham Clark +106 vs. Si Woo Kim
Earlier in the season Clark was battling with Scheffler for Tour bragging rights. Clark won the truncated Pebble Beach Pro-Am and finished second to the world’s No. 1 player in back to back tournaments in March. There was a slight decline after that but Clark battled back with a pair of top 10s in three starts before a solid showing at the Olympics.
