The Genesis Scottish Open got another boost with the alliance between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. Already a prestigious Rolex Series event the tournament is the first to be co-sanctioned by the two supreme golf circuits thus attracting a stronger field than we’ve ever seen. Played on the links-style Renaissance Club in North Berwick, it also serves as a warm up for The Open Championship taking place at famed St. Andrews. Some of the sports best sit at the top of the odds board with Jon Rahm the betting favorite in the outright market. Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Patrick Cantlay all have odds shorter than 20/1 and all are featured in tournament matchups. Need to Know
Hosting for the fourth straight time, The Renaissance Club is a typical links course that dominate in this area. There have been modifications to the property since becoming host with a reduction in yardage from the 2021 playing. At 7,293 yards it’s not long by Tour standards with the elements on the exposed course being the primary defense. Min Woo Lee won last year at 18-under proving that anyone can have a big week. It will be harder this year and going forward with half the field made up of PGA Tour pros after the alliance. Lee beat Fitzpatrick and Thomas Detry on the first playoff hole, the third time in as many tournaments the winner was decided on extra holes. And with conditions expected to be tame we could see scores plummet.
Scottish Open Matchup Picks
Adrian Meronk +112 vs. Tyrrell Hatton
There are golfers on the DP World Tour who can compete with their brethren on the PGA side. And with few value picks out there I came across this gem. It’s been a solid run for Meronk, who bounced back from a MC at the European Open to claim the title last week at the Irish Open. To say he’s been close would be an understatement. Prior to his win Meronk had six finishes among the top-6 in 11 previous starts. Cruising under the radar perhaps, he has plenty of value.
Justin Thomas -108 vs. Scottie Scheffler
Without a win in nearly three months, Scheffler is cooling off leaving the door open for Thomas in this matchup. Of course the previous statement was made tongue-in-cheek and Scheffler had a few close calls since the Masters. But backing Thomas isn’t as much of a stretch as you might think with his results at the Renaissance Club a reason for optimism. JT has a pair of top-10s in his two starts with a scoring average of 66.87 in those eight rounds. Not bad.
Collin Morikawa -114 vs. Cameron Smith
Morikawa proved to be a quick study turning his T71 here last year into a win at The Open just a week later. He was admittedly unfamiliar with links golf ahead of the 2021 edition, but he should be a seasoned veteran now. His two best finishes since March came in star-studded fields with a top-5 in the Masters and U.S. Open, and the field assembled this week gives the Scottish Open a major-like feel.
Will Zalatoris -134 vs. Hideki Matsuyama
I typically don’t back players priced as high as Zalatoris, but it’s hard to ignore him when he gets on runs of solid form. I’ve said for a while that his first career win is coming and I even backed him in the outright market. So if I think that highly of Z-man throwing down on him in a matchup is a no-brainer. Six times in his last eight starts he finished among the top six with a pair of runners-up. Overall this season he has eight top-10s and three seconds in 18 starts.
Ryan Fox -129 vs. Billy Horschel
Fox is another on the DP World Tour playing insane golf at the moment. He won for the second time in his DP Tour career in February starting a streak where he’s 9 of 10 with three seconds and a third among seven top-10s.
