Many of the world’s top players are in Scotland this week for the Genesis Scottish Open. This event is co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour and GP World Tour, so there will be an interesting mix of players this week. The Genesis Scottish Open is a tune-up on a links course for the players before next week’s Open Championship at Royal Liverpool. You can expect a close finish, as the first three Genesis Scottish Opens went to a playoff and it almost happened again last year but Xander Schauffele pulled out a one-shot win over Kurt Kitayama. Scoring has been unpredictable in this event, as Bernd Weisberger won the tournament in 2019 shooting 22-under par, while Schauffele won last year with a 7-under par score. Odds Analysis
Rory McIlroy +850
When it comes to winning this event there is no question that driving distance is very important. This course is long and there are not a lot of areas where going into the rough will cause huge problems. Did you know that McIlroy leads the PGA Tour in driving distance? I think this is a perfect spot for McIlroy to get ready for next week’s Open Championship and I expect him to contend for the win this week.
Tyrrell Hatton +2000
Did you know that Hatton has yet to win this year? He is definitely playing well enough to win, as he has gained strokes in ball striking in all of his starts this season. He has 10 top 30 finishes this season and seven top 10 finishes. He has above average power off the tee and he can be in contention on Sunday.
Tommy Fleetwood +2100
A player who is even more overdue for a win than Hatton is Fleetwood, as he has never won a PGA Tour event. And yes, this is technically a co-sanctioned event, but it would still count as a PGA Tour win. He has played well at the Renaissance Club in the past with a second and a fourth-place finish in three tries.
Wyndham Clark +4800
This is a breakout season for Clark who has already won the U.S. Open and Wells Fargo Championship. He is also one of the longest hitters on the PGA Tour, as he ranks 8th in driving distance. Why can’t Clark keep his strong play going and win again this week?
Gary Woodland +9500
I will throw one bomb in here and go with Woodland. I know that Woodland hasn’t contended for a win in quite a while, but he knows how to win and this course should suit him well. He ranks 9th on the PGA Tour in driving distance.
Course: The Renaissance Club – 7,237 yards, Par 70. The Renaissance Club opened in 2007 and is already known for hosting big events. It will be hosting the Genesis Scottish Open for the fifth time. It is a great spot for players to get back into links golf and to prepare for the Open Championship.
