There is no rest on the PGA Tour. Just two weeks removed from the Tour Championship, the fall season gets underway this weekend on the 7,203-yard, par-72 North Course at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif. with the Safeway Open. However, some of the bigger names in the sport will take a breather and be noticeably absent with only two of the world’s top-50 players scheduled to compete.
Leading the wide-open field at the top of the odds board is Patrick Cantlay, who came in at +1151 at BookMaker.eu. After a disappointing showing in the Ryder Cup, Phil Mickelson will look to wash the sour taste out of his mouth with a good showing in wine country. At +2853 betting odds, Leftie is the sixth-favorite among the field, and along with Cantlay the only golfer ranked among the top-50 in the world. If you believe in names there are a couple of good ones competing this weekend. Curtis Luck and Cameron Champ can be wagered on in matchups. Here’s a list of more matchups and odds for this weekend’s Safeway Open.

Safeway Open Matchup Picks
The greens at Silverado tend to be on the slow side, and even experienced players on the course will take a few holes to adjust. Also, there are some concerns from the tee box with a number of narrow fairways that put an emphasis on driving accuracy. For the most part the course is straightforward with few hazards and big scores can be had for the big hitters.
Emiliano Grillo -110 vs. Joaquin Niemann
Grillo is no stranger to Silverado having won the tournament in 2015, and he was just a few shots off the lead after 54 holes last year before fading. His game is well suited for the course and he should again be in contention. Niemann is a talent, however, at 19-years-old, he’s shown his age with inconsistent play.
Patrick Cantlay -180 vs. Ryan Moore
The odds are long but it’s a gamble that will pay off. Cantlay is playing as well as anyone entering the tournament. He had a solid season with seven top-10 finishes and claimed his first tour victory last November. He had a strong showing at the Tour Championship placing 21st and he’s the highest ranked player in the field. He’s a newbie to Silverado, but Cantlay can play anywhere.
Beau Hossler +105 vs. Adam Hadwin
A notorious fast starter, Hossler is a value pick at +105. He finished among the top-10 in two of his first three starts on the PGA Tour and could contend for the individual title at Silverado. Hossler is money on the greens ranking among the best in birdie average, and that alone should be enough to keep him in contention. He doesn’t hit for distance, but he makes up for it with his putting, and that’s crucial on the Silverado greens.
Cameron Champ +105 vs. Brandon Hagy
For the same reason we should fade Champ is why we take him to best Hagy in this matchup. Champ is making his debut as a PGA Tour member and has some history at Silverado, though it’s not good. He missed the cut at last year’s event when playing as an amateur. If his short game catches up with his driver, Champ could be dangerous. He led the Web.com Tour this year in driving distance at 343.1 yards. And, you can’t go wrong with his last name.
