Golf Betting – 2018 Safeway Open Odds

2018 Safeway Open Odds

There is no down time when it comes to the PGA Tour. Just a few days removed from the conclusion of the Ryder Cup and less than two weeks after the Tour Championship, the fall season gets underway Thursday with the Safeway Open at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif. Patrick Cantlay is one of just two players ranked among the top-50 in the world competing in this event and he went off as the betting favorite at +1151 at BookMaker.eu.

There are not a lot or recognizable names scheduled to participate and with Phil Mickelson the only other player among the top-50, the field is wide open. The only Ryder Cup player at the Safeway Open, Lefty has struggled with his game recently, went winless in France, and is the sixth favorite in Napa at +2853 odds. Mickelson probably wouldn’t even be competing if his management company didn’t run the tournament. Two-time defending champion Brendan Steele can become the first golfer since 2011 to three-peat a PGA Tour event, but oddsmakers have him down the list at +3279.

Odds Analysis

Patrick Cantlay +1151

He’s the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 22 in the World Golf Ranking and he’s coming off a solid season. Cantlay qualified for the Tour Championship last month and placed 21st, but he had seven top-10s during the 2018 season and captured his first tour title at the Shriners Hospital for Children Open last November. Cantlay was the No. 1 ranked amateur for a record 54 consecutive weeks before turning pro in 2012. He’s making his debut at Silverado, but his ball-striking will serve him well on the course.

Brandt Snedeker +1977

Snedeker won the Wyndham Championship in August, blistering the Sedgefield Country Club course with an opening round 59, becoming the 10th player in PGA Tour history to score a round below 60 in competition. Snedeker returns to wine country for the first time since 2015 and brings an impressive resume with nine tour victories.

Ryan Moore +2127

A highly successful amateur career hasn’t translated to the PGA Tour. Moore has five tournament victories since turning pro in 2005, but he hasn’t won since 2015. Moore is a big hitter and consistent on the greens, which leads to some nice rounds and tournament scores, and should play well on the Silverado course, but he hasn’t been able to close out a win.

Emiliano Grillo +2425

Grillo has only one PGA Tour victory and that came at Silverado when this event was known as the Fry’s.com Open. His driving accuracy will help on the long, narrow fairways, but Grillo has struggled with his short game and regaining his touch this weekend is a longshot. He’s among the top-5 favorites, but realistically he needs to be faded on any betting card.

Brendan Steele +3279

The defending two-time champion of the Safeway Open and a native Californian, Steele can become the first player to win the same event three consecutive times since Steve Stricker captured his third straight John Deere Classic in 2011. He might be a trendy pick due to his success here, but recent form says fade him. Steele missed the cut in four of his last five events and he placed inside the top-40 just once in his final 10 events of the season.

Course: North Course at Silverado Resort and Spa - 7,203-yards, Par-72.

Hitting fairways is a key to having success on this course, which was ranked the third-most difficult last year to find the fairway. Players that can keep the ball on the short grass will have an advantage. The past two winners – Steele and Grillo – each rank highly in driving accuracy.
