The last PGA Tour stop before the final major of the season takes place this week in the Quad Cities area with the 50th playing of the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. The tournament returns after being a COVID casualty last year and its unlucky spot on the schedule has most big name players absent; either taking the week off ahead of The Open Championship or playing across the pond in the European Tour’s Rolex Series event. That doesn’t mean the play will be below par. There is still a PGA Tour title, the prize money that comes with it and valuable FedEx Cup points on the line. A watered down field leaves us some intriguing matchups so head over to BookMaker.eu to check out the latest odds and to place your wager.

Need to Know
With a field like this it’s going to take some extra handicapping to turn a profit. It’s a good thing I’ll delve closer into a few pairings to see where we can make some coin. The good news is that TPC Deere Run, which has hosted this event since 2000, has yielded a bunch of low scores over the years. In 2018 Michael Kim torched the layout to a record 27-under to win by eight swings. In the most recent edition Dylan Frittelli was 21-under and nine of the last 11 winners were -20 or better. Wide fairways keep the ball in play giving short accurate hitters an edge. The course typically offers up a number of birdie opportunities and the field has taken advantage in the past.
John Deere Classic Matchup Picks
Sungjae Im -125 vs. Russell Henley
He’s one of if not the most recognizable player in the field and he’s offered at a decent price for a favorite so I’m all over Im in this matchup. I wondered why he even entered the event, but since he’s here he will go all out. And he’s coming off a solid outing with a T8 in the Rocket Mortgage Classic so the game appears to be in a good spot. He’s put up plenty of red numbers this season and Deere Run yields the most of nearly every course on Tour so expect more of the same this weekend.
Kevin Streelman -125 vs. Russell Henley
The game has a way of setting the universe straight. Streelman had a glorious run of five straight made cuts with four consecutive top-20s before his MC in the Travelers. And of course I backed him in a matchup in that one betting on the run continuing. I see that failure as a minor bump in the road and given his recent form and history at Deere Run we should see Streelman back in the hunt. He has three top-10s in eight starts here and the forgiving layout should help cure his ills.
Seamus Power +110 vs. Cameron Davis
The JDC has propped up many first time winners over the years and Power is in search of his maiden. He’s on a nice run of form going 7 for 7 with four straight top-20s coming in. And he has plenty to play for since he’s still outside the playoff picture. Those FedEx Cup points are screaming his name and Power is probably a good bet for the outright. I just need him to finish higher than Davis, though, and I’ll happily back him at plus-odds.
Troy Merritt -135 vs. Patton Kizzire
I have to wonder how Merritt will respond after his playoff loss last week. I’m counting on his competitive fire to take over and lift him this week after coming so close to his third PGA Tour victory. And it better since I’m backing a big favorite, something I don’t normally do in my matchups. But this field is ripe for the picking and Merritt has secured a top-10 in half of his previous eight starts.
Beau Hossler +115 vs. Hank Lebioda
This is a good time to back Hossler thanks to the serious run of form he’s on. We hadn’t seen much from him until last month when he finished T19 at Congaree. He followed that with a T10 in the Travelers and was T25 last week with a Saturday 72 his downfall. Otherwise Hossler has been stroking the ball and he flashed a game perfect for Deere Run two years ago when he finished T26. I’ll get behind him now before the betting markets catch up.
