John Deere Classic Preview, Odds and Predictions

2018-Bookmaker-PGA-John-Deer-Classic-Betting-Odds

It is the week before the Open Championship so most of the top names in golf are either taking the week off or they are playing the Scottish Open on the European Tour. None of the world’s top ranked players are in the field for this week’s John Deere Classic, so the favorite is Francesco Molinari at odds of +900. Bryson DeChambeau and Zach Johnson listed as the co-second choices at odds of +1200. Let’s look at the odds and predictions for the John Deere Classic.

Odds Analysis

Francesco Molinari +900

It is hard to argue with Molinari being listed as the favorite. He is coming off his first win on the PGA Tour and he also has a win and a second place finish on the European Tour this season. This course should suit his game perfectly and he is the clear favorite this week.

Bryson DeChambeau +1200

The defending champion has five top five finishes this season and he can actually take over the FedExCup points lead with a win this week. Oftentimes I will sell DeChambeau short, but the field this week is not that strong and he could contend.

Zach Johnson+1200

You can definitely make a case for taking Johnson this week. He has been great at TPC Deere Run where he leads all players in adjusted strokes gained per round since 2010. He won this event in 2012 and finished second in 2009, 2013 and 2014. He has seven top ten finishes in this tourney. Johnson is not a long hitter and TPC Deere Run suits his game.

Joaquin Niemann+1600

I am still not sold that Niemann should be listed as one of the top contenders yet. He is definitely making progress on the PGA Tour, but I am still not sure he is ready to win. I think he is overvalued at these odds.

Ryan Moore+2000

Moore missed the cut in this event last year but he has made eight straight cuts and he had three top 10 finishes in this event. He could be a contender this week.

Kyle Stanley+2200

I think you can make a case for taking Stanley at these odds, especially since very few top players are in the field. Stanley is capable of getting hot and that is what is needed on this course where birdies are plentiful.

Chesson Hadley+2800

My longshot this week is Hadley who has finished in the top 10 in eight of his last 11 starts. He ranks in the Top 20 on the PGA Tour in scoring average and birdie average. We know that making a lot of birdies is necessary this week and Hadley should do well on this course.

Course: TPC Deere Run is a par 71 that measures 7,268 yards. It is a relatively easy course where a lot of birdies can be made. Paul Goydos shot a 59 on this course in 2010 and still lost to Steve Stricker who shot a 60 in the same event. Long hitters don’t usually win this event, as it is dominated by shorter hitters like Zach Johnson and Steve Stricker. Accuracy and approach shots are the keys to winning this week.
