Masters Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. You can look at any number of statistics for this week’s Masters because the event is played on the same course every year. Experience means a lot but golf is constantly changing and it was just three years ago that Jordan Spieth won this event in just his second try. Rarely does a golfer over the age of 40 win this event, but Phil Mickelson has a ton of Masters experience and he is playing really well right now, so he is looking to break that trend. One thing we do know is that to win at Augusta you need length and you need to avoid making bogeys. It also helps if you are a good putter and unlike some courses, driving accuracy is not a must at Augusta.
Justin Thomas +105 vs. Jordan Spieth
I don’t get the odds on this matchup at all, as Thomas is simply a better player right now than Spieth. I know that Spieth has won the Masters before and he loves Augusta, but Spieth is still not putting that well and I don’t think he can win the Masters without putting great. Thomas may not be ranked No. 1 in the world, but he is the best player and we get him at plus money in this matchup.
Kevin Chappell -152 vs. Matthew Fitzpatrick
Chappell finished tied for 7th in the Masters last year and he has three top 10 finishes this season. I like the overall game of Fitzpatrick but I don’t think he has the distance to win at Augusta. I will lay the price and take Chappell in this matchup.
Patrick Cantlay -115 vs. Tyrrell Hatton
One of my longshot picks to win this week is Cantlay who is making his second Masters appearance. Hatton has played well this season, but I don’t think he has the temperament to win at Augusta. I will take Cantlay in this matchup.
Paul Casey -138 vs. Jon Rahm
Could this be the year that Casey finally wins a major? He won at Copperhead earlier this season and he is ranked 5th on the PGA Tour in all-around. He has been really good at Augusta with a tie for 6th, a tie for 4th and a 6th place finish since 2015. I will lay the price and take Casey in this matchup.
